I have a rising Junior in HS and she had a D in Geometry (2nd Semester Sophomore year). She is interested in UC schools. I read the attached to say that at this point in time, no other subsequent math courses can validate a deficiency in Geometry (not even Pre-Calc). See pages 21 and 22.
Is my interpretation accurate? I assume this is the latest data? Thank you.
Her HS won’t allow her to retake the course. So we will have to look at an online resource. The question then becomes: can she just take the second semester of Geometry or does she need to retake the whole year?
I’ve heard of UC Scout, but I don’t see an option for second semester only. Does anyone know of other online courses? Thank you.
I don’t know about the quality of this (have just seen it mentioned before) but they claim to be fully accredited/credit accepted and they seem to offer geometry by semester. https://svhs.co/high-school-geometry/
Is your student at a California school? It seems odd that they don’t have an option for grade recovery to meet UC/CSU requirements if so?
For the UC’s, an accredited provider for the repeat class/semester grade will replace the current D grade for validation and GPA calculations but both the original and repeat grade have to be reported on the UC application.
Please note for the Cal states, for grade replacement the repeat class needs to be the exact same class so by retaking the 2nd semester with another provider, the grade will not be replaced in the CSU GPA calculation and both grades will have to be reported on the application.
I also find it unusual that the student cannot retake the class at their HS.
What qualifies as the exact same class? Having the same syllabus for the second semester as her current HS’ syllabus or retaking at the same High School? And if the grade is not replaced for the GPA calculation, does it still validate the course?
She attends a private College Prep school and they only allow remediation for an F.
Cal State Apply defines repeated courses as the exact same course with the exact same course title taken at the same school or school district at a later time.
You might want to ask the GC what other students have done in the past to remediate D grades.
Yes, it looks like beginning 2025-2026 (page 21), either omission or deficient (D/F) grade in geometry cannot be validated by a more advanced course. This is a change from 2024-2025 (page 20), where a deficient grade (but not omission) of geometry can be validated by precalculus, calculus, or other advanced math.
