DD got admitted to Merced in psychology. (Her first choice). And also got admitted to riverside. She is waiting for honors decision in Merced.
I feel the university staff at Merced are active and wanting to help students join and saw some recent article about UCM becoming R1 ? Jist between these two UCs, any recommendations on which university is better ? My daughter feels like Merced might be very remote with nothing much to do beyond the university (which is true) but not sure if the access of faculty, research and class sizes would make it better.
Just need some guidance on these two UCs.
Thanks
I would make a new post in the College search and selection forum asking for opinions on these 2 campuses. Is she still waiting on any other UC’s? You might want to wait until all decisions are posted before trying to decide between the campuses.
Before deciding on any school, I would physically visit the campus, talk to students, check out the major curriculum and explore the surrounding area. Different students have different priorities so only they can determine the best fit. I think both campuses can offer a student some great opportunities but in the end, where the student would be the happiest for the next 4 years is important.

I’m a UCM professor, in social science but not psych. Our school (social sciences, humanities, and arts or SSHA) has been doing outreach events, where prospectives can meet faculty and current students online or as part of a specialized tour. Not many students have taken advantage of those opportunities, so it would be a great time to meet some of the psych faculty 1-1 and ask about their program.
You should also come to Bobcat Day on April 19 and UCR’s equivalent (I think it’s Highlander Day, and I think on April 12). See campus, see town, lots of opportunities to talk to students and faculty.
It sounds like you already know some of the key points about UCM — better access to faculty and research opportunities, generally smaller class sizes. Though psych is one of the largest majors on campus, so their classes will tend to be larger. You’ll definitely want to talk to current students about that.
Great to have you here!
I’m late posting this (only recently joined here.)
Daughter was auto accept (ELC) a couple months ago.
