UC Personal Statement "Concrete Examples"

I know what concrete examples mean, but it’s difficult to include one in my UC essay when my topic is the humility I developed as a result of my parent’s love. I realize it’s complicated and overused but it’s the best thing I could pull from my boring life.

With that said, would the surge of emotions I get when my dad tells me how proud he is of me count as a concrete example? Taken out of context, emotions are indeed abstract but as support for an abstract thesis?

I really should have started on this months ago. ><

Can you provide examples of how you have reacted/behaved in ways that others without your humility would not, if you weren’t so humble??? Sorry, bad joke… I have no idea how to brag (which the essay requires, with finesse) about humility.

Try contrasting your behavior with others or with yourself before this humility kicked in???

I can take a look if you like. You have boxed yourself in a bit.

Thanks, I agree. To be truthful, my life is absolutely average. My EC really sucks. I think I’m pretty talented in math/science, but so are the other 100000 Asians applying. Of course I’ve also been told I’m modest given my abilities so I thought it might be a good idea to write about this.

My thesis is actually that as I became humble, I realized intelligence, sheet talent, and prestige should not be used to measure success. Instead, one should look at how far he/she has come to achieving his/her potential or fulfilling her role in society. And somehow, I’m going to relate this to computer science (my major). I know what to do, but wording it has not come easy.

When I finish this, I’ll let PM it to you if you don’t mind.
