i am looking to go into the medical profession so my major is pre-med at the moment. And i will be applying to UCI, UCR, UCSB, and UCLA.My concern is that I wrote my personal statement about my religion but given the recent tragedies, a few have told me it is not a good idea to do so; it is also a sensitive subject. i did show it to my counselor however, and she said it was really good but there’s still going to be the risk of having someone read it and find it offensive. Should i stick to the religion one or find something else to talk about??
I can see that this is your first post, which indicates to me that you made a CC account just to ask this question and that it has been on your mind for some time. To start off, NO I do not think you should change your essay just because an admissions officer would find it offensive. They are not supposed to discriminate based on religion (and even if for some reason they discriminate, would you even want to be at a school that does that?). I strongly encourage you to present yourself to schools AS YOU WANT, not what you think the admissions officers are looking for or what might offend them. If it offends them, you are better off not being at that school. Long story short, keep your essay and good luck with the admissions process!
Admissions officers aren’t supposed to discriminate based on religion, but many may have some sort of inner bias against those that are. It’s best to steer clear from writing about things that admissions officers may disagree with or overly contentious issues.
You don’t have much time left, however, and I think it’d be best if you just stick with what you wrote and spend these last couple of days revising what you already have. You won’t be rejected just because an admissions officer disagreed with the topic of your essay. Good luck.
Thank you @stanforduscduke and @yinuos ! I really appreciate it. I decided to stick with my original statement. I submitted my application earlier today and and so now I’m hoping for the best. Thanks again.
