UC personal statement prompt 1 - Volunteer work

“Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.”

I volunteered at a crisis center, which is relevant to my major, but only for 2 months until I had to quit due to a personal emergency. Then school became really busy and I couldn’t find volunteer work since. I was starting to write about it in my personal statement, but kind of feel weird about talking about it since I didn’t do it for very long but I learned a lot from what I did learn in the short amount of time I spent with them, and I couldn’t list it in the volunteer section of my UC application.

Before that, for 2 years during and after high school, I volunteered at a non-profit that supplied business attire for low-income and homeless women to wear during job interviews to look professional and land a job. I did administrative duties and greeted clients. But that volunteer work was 13 years ago and I did put it on my UC application.

Should I talk about the volunteer work I did 13 years ago in my personal statement because I did it for the longest amount of time and it is on my application, or the most recent volunteer work I did even though it was only for 2 months and it’s not on my UC application?

Hi again! I think that you should write about whichever one is more meaningful to you. Even if it was a shorter amount of time, no one can say that you couldn’t be impacted in a two-month period, especially if you took a really hands-on role in your volunteer work. Although, by the sound of the prompt, it seems like you could write about both if you wanted to.

@OnMyWay2013 Thanks again! I actually went with talking about both. What was more important was how they impacted me so I focused on talking about that.
