UC prompt #2
My heart skipped a beat as the judge motioned at me and my goat to move to the far side of the rink. In the animal judging world, this was either really good, or really bad. These polarities would not be clarified until the judge spoke through the microphone. Not only for the people inside the rink to hear, but for everyone else in the general vicinity of the animal barns to hear.
The judge picked up his microphone, and motioned to the five pairs of showmen, and goats on the far side of the rink where I was. “These are fine showman no doubt” he said followed by a gesture to the other side of the show rink “These Showman are talented as well.” By this time I my forehead was wet with perspiration. Did he like my style ? I thought to myself. “these showmen” he motioned to my side of the rink “are mature, and handle their goats with care, elegance, and style. All are excellent showmen, and women. They can show my goats anytime. I place them first through fifth, respectively.” my heart nearly leaped through my FFA Jacket.
As the judge went on to give reasons as to why each goat was placed in each position, I couldnÂ’t help but thinking about just how much effort I had to put into my goat, and how much time I had to practice showman ship. I may not have had the perfect goat, or have been the best show- woman, nor have I been involved in agriculture my whole life. Just the opposite, my goat was the runt of the litter, it was my third time showing and animal, and I had grown up in the suburb of one of the biggest cities in the united states.
Despite the circumstances, my agriculture teacher helped me find a goat, and taught me how to show an animal at my high schoolÂ’s farm. I soon experienced the joys and discomforts of agricultural life, and the inborn fondness that it awoke inside me. Waking at the break of dawn to feed my goat before school, and arriving home late at night because I had been out at the school farm. I aspire to inspire the students I will someday teach, just as my agriculture teacher inspired me by giving them the best agriculture education they could possibly receive.
