total shi.t
I hate this
i mean at least it’s not as high as penn state’s in state tuition–they’re almost at 15,000 just for tuition alone, SO, things could def. be worse but at the same time come ON it was like 7,500 a year ago wasn’t it?

Hey you’re preachin’ to the choir. Originally the UC system was supposed to offer free tuition, sort of a Blue&Gold for everyone…but you see how we’ve strayed from that just a tad bit…

They used to brag on how UC’s educated the brightest not the richest back in the day. That was the whole point.

They haven’t been under $7,500 since the 2004-2005 academic year. Using UCSC as reference since I knew where to find this information offhand fairly quickly. If anyone has a source for the fees at the other UC campuses, I’d love to have links so I can see them too :)

Emphasis mine. Granted, it’s not a guarantee, but a large of portion of us already had our financial aid packages adjusted several weeks ago in anticipation of this fee increase.

Searching for archival fees for the other campuses right now, I doubt many of them stayed that close to the $8,700 even before the approved fee increases.

2008-2009: $9,669.50
2007-2008: $8,967.50
2006-2007: $8,285.50
2005-2006: $8,109.50
2004-2005: $7,468.50
2003-2004: $6,317.50
(the records go back much further, though)

Awesome. And just found the Berkeley archives too. Sneaky little devils who made the charts made it look like it’s not that much, but they only show the “per semester” cost so you have to remember to double it for some of the older files and add the fall and spring costs together when they start being different a few years ago.

I don’t think the tuition is the entire problem, it is only the tip of the iceberg.

The problem is that the UC system is being dismantled. The schools are losing funding, cutting classes, cutting staff, and losing the most prestigious professors. The fact is that the UC system will not remain world class education if this keeps going. They will not remain competitive with the privates.

And what if my family’s income is a little above 70K but when I go to UC it will be lower since I would not be able to work full time? My husbands income is only 52,000 plus he is still paying out his student loans. We would not be able to pay the full price of the tuition.

ksForBerkeley: You can talk to the financial aid department and request a review of your financial aid package if it is not significant enough due to a change in income. They’re really quite nice (from what I have experienced) at most of the campuses and willing to work with you :).

actually low income does mean lower class. From a sociological prospective, there is the capitalist class, the upper middle, the lower middle, the working class, the working poor, and the underclass. It’s all based on wealth mostly, but according to many it should be based on power, property, and prestige…none of which a lower class person has. Do not confuse the word class with sophistication, that is a fallacy.
