I would second this from 1st hand experience. I was waitlisted at my T20 dream school, accepted to a very good T30, and just hoped every day to hear I’d gotten off the waitlist. I never did, and it soured me on going to my very good school for at least the 1st year. It was a bad, teenage brain mistake that was completely unnecessary.
They are working on it. Actually, all of the UCs are working on it. It is difficult because everyone wants more students admitted, but campuses (and the surrounding community) need the infrastructure to support those additional students.
According to this article, “UC San Diego ranks third in the nation for student housing inventory, just behind Penn State University and UCLA.”
2 years at UCSD. 4 at UCLA but most still move off campus there.
which means that they don’t have to build as much new housing for 4 year guarantee. UCLA prioritized 4 year guarantee and that is the right thing to do. i would imagine if UCSD had prioritized it they would also have 4 year guarantee by now.
Have some patience. Tons of construction on that campus. They are making a big effort to house students.
It was only last year that they started to have a 2 year guarantee. If you look at the same page from 2022, first year students had priority for housing, but they didn’t even commit to a guarantee for them: Housing Priority
It’s also easier to get around now that they have the new trolley stop. This might make transportation to off campus housing areas easier, I don’t know.
8th College was just built and opened in Fall 2023.
My daughter got off the waitlist in June last year, the day before she graduated from HS ! It was a nightmare, and yet she’s now at UCSD and couldn’t be happier.
Yes, one building is already open and the other will be soon.
They have. That’s the goal and they’re building like crazy.

I agree not to get hung up on a waitlist school,
But OTOH, my daughter refused to tour UCSD because she was waitlisted, and then had only 7 days to get down there and make her decision the same week as graduation and grad night. It was a lot, I discouraged her from switching schools after committing elsewhere, but she’s super happy at UCSD (and I was wrong).

We just got back from a day on the campus, cranes everywhere. That place is in the middle of a growth spurt.
go to UCLA?
My kid got email from UCSD w/ subject: You’re Invited! Exclusive Admitted Student Receptions. Is this sent to all admitted students? or selective students?
My son also got the email. I believe everyone gets it.
Same.
My son also got the email. Any feedback about the receptions from previous year? He has a school sport event that he already committed. Are the information from the reception similar to admitted student day on April 13?
it is good that they are doing the right thing now. they should have prioritized it several years ago.
