UC San Diego Class of 2028 Official Thread

TYVM for the input and thoughts. Just starting to read/understand. The link should help.

I don’t know that much about it other than it’s more at the southern part of the campus near the new Eighth College and it has my daughter (in Sixth College)'s favorite dining. She goes there regularly. That’s the end of campus that sort of has arts and theater stuff – and it’s kind of close to La Jolla Village where kids eat and shop (but often go there by trolley). I’m not sure what the GE’s are for Revelle.

I see that the registration for Triton Day on April 13th is already closed. I wonder if admitted students will be given a chance to register late. Does anyone know?

Admitted students can register now for Triton Day through their portal (Saturday April 13th). Unfortunately, it’s on the same day as UCLA. Wish the UCs would schedule these events on different days. At least UCI is on April 20th.

Sorry. This statement was based on the registration link via the public UCSD website. Admitted students can still register through their individual portal.

I applied to USCD for Computer Science, but I was accepted for my alternate major of Electrical Engineering. What are the chances that I will be able to change major to the Computer Engineering in the ECE department, and can I do that before starting in the fall?

You cannot change majors until you complete the courses required to change majors.

Once a student matriculates at UC San Diego, the only way to change into one of the majors in the CSE Department from another major outside of our department is to go through our CSE Selective Major Application Process.

Read through the information posted on the link.

https://cse.ucsd.edu/undergraduate/cse-selective-major-process#

A minimum of 8 units of screening courses must have been completed at UC San Diego prior to application: CSE 8B or 11, CSE 12, CSE 15L, CSE 20 (MATH 15A or MATH 109 may be substituted for CSE 20 if taken first), CSE 21 (or MATH 154 or MATH 184), CSE 30, and CSE 100. Courses must be completed with a letter grade. Equivalent transfer coursework will not count toward the eligibility requirement.

Must have a minimum of a 3.0 UCSD GPA in the screening courses completed at UCSD. All screening courses taken at UCSD will be used towards the CSE Screening GPA calculation (as long as the course carries units of credit awarded - e.g. not retaking courses the student already has equivalent credit for).

May not have a D or F in any of the screening courses (unless the course has been retaken for a passing grade). Students also may not have any outstanding grades for the screening courses or any reason (i.e Incompletes, pending Academic Integrity case, etc).

Applicants must be in Good Academic Standing.

Applicants may only apply to CSE once. Any subsequent applications will be deemed ineligible. Students who apply without meeting all eligibility requirements will be disqualified (application will be flagged as ineligible), and the application will count as their one CSE Selective major application.

What about the Computer Engineering major in the ECE department? It looks like Computer Engineering can be done from either the ECE or CSE departments. Would it be easier to change into ECE CE than CSE CE?

Here is the information:
https://www.ece.ucsd.edu/undergraduate/selective-major-application#:

Looks like they are completely shutting down all applications to change to Computer Engineering from the ECE department after summer 2024. :frowning:

I would contact the department to confirm.

One thing for sure, if you got used to grade inflation in high school, you will surely be disappointed. Geisel Library will be your only entertainment all day all night .

My sister got into UCSD for Mathematics - Computer Science.

However, her major of choice was Bioengineering and her alternate major of choice was Computer Science. UCSD gave her a third major that isn’t either of these. Is this a mistake?

Are we able to contact the university and ask for one of the two majors she had actually applied for?

UCSD states that if you select a capped selective major as your first choice, then your alternate major needs to be a non-selective major. Both majors are selective so UCSD admitted into an available non-selective major.

No, she cannot change into either major until she goes through the change of major process for these selective majors as an enrolled student.

I believe CS specifically has recently become completely capped at UCSD, i.e. if not admitted into the major then you may not transfer into it. You could as recently as two years ago I believe. But no longer if I understand correctly.

CS has been a capped/ selective major for many years but they have opened it up so current students can transfer into the major through a selective major process which is still very competitive and not guaranteed.
