UC San Diego Class of 2029 Official Thread

Welcome prospective Tritons. It’s that time of year again as the UC application has now opened and submission starts October 1 through December 2. I am @Gumbymom one of the two UC Forum Champions/Moderators. My Co-Forum Champion is @lkg4answers and we are knowledgeable on the increasingly complicated UC admissions process and hopefully we can help any prospective UC applicants with their questions.

UC San Diego like all the UC’s are test blind and will use 13 areas of criteria to review Freshman applicants. Each campus will weight the various areas of criteria differently so one size does not fit all. The UC application website has plenty of information that can help determine if UC San Diego is a good option when applying. Below is some admit information specific to the school.

The campus does not admit students on the basis of their choice of UC San Diego undergraduate college or major but Intended major is taken into consideration in the admission process . Alternate majors are considered and capped/selective majors are highly competitive. Also note: Capped/Selective majors require additional pre-req courses and specific GPA to be able to qualify if changing majors. CS/CSE require a direct admit as a Freshman.

If applying to a Capped/Selective major, it is recommended to select a non-selective major as an alternate.

Selective majors include all majors in the College of Engineering, Biological Sciences, Data Science and Public Health.

When applying to UCSD, you need to rank the Residential colleges as part of the UC application. Below are some links to aid in your rankings:

My kid is looking at * [Human Developmental Sciences Bachelor of Arts] (B.A. Requirements) / or

Are these selective majors / ie are they considered a branch of Bio/Health in UCSD ? please help. thanks

@Gumbymom

Current Selective Majors:

S25 got into SDSU this month, which I understand to means he is a top applicant. Wondering is this has any correlation to his odds of getting into UCSD? UCSD is his top choice school as a physics major who wants to study plasma physics. Do they generally both accept the same students?

Congratulations to your son!

There is no correlation between CSU admission and UC admission (to any campus). SDSU and UCSD are in the same county but they are different universities with different applications, different admissions teams and different admissions criteria.

is this also for transfer students? don’t transfers typically come out later?

No the timeline is for Freshman admits since this discussion is for the Freshman Class of 2029. Transfer decisions come out in April.

Edited: For 2024 Transfers, decisions were posted on April 19.

College confidential has a Sub Forum for UC Transfers so you can ask questions there: UC Transfers - College Confidential Forums

UCSD admissions instagram posted yesterday about decision reaction videos. I would think this indicates release on Friday.

More than likely, yes. Or a tease that it could be any day this week. Time to obsessively check portal.

They have done only Fridays for the last several years, so some other day of the week seems unlikely.
