@ste1111 oh okay I’ll check that out I know I can switch to an uncapped major it’s the capped one’s like Bio that I really want I’ll check it out thank you so much the application portal right?
Checked it out looks like I can only do uncapped majors. bummer
Does anyone have any thoughts on UCSD for Cog Sci or UCI for Informatics? UCSD’s program would probably take me over the two years because I’m behind on the Pre-reqs but they seem to have a more established program over UCI… I would also potentially have a bit of a longer commute for UCSD but if their program is more likely to help me get a job out of school I’m willing to do whatever it takes lol.
Any insight would be really appreciated!
@brightplaces what did you end up choosing? Im still stuck between UCSD and UCLA
This is my last semester and If I get F or NP, Will be I rejected?
I already admitted and professor give F with unreasonable reason.
You would probably have to convince UCSD that the professor was incorrect. an F is pretty substantial hopefully they are more accepting with what is going on.
Has anyone heard back about the Regents scholarship?
Ucsd just sent me an email saying I’m eligible for a deposit waiver. God bless LOL did anyone else get this?
I haven’t SIR’d yet just incase something random about COVID pops up. Are there any deadlines regarding housing or required forms that the portal isn’t showing me since I haven’t accepted my offer?
@letstryround2 On the top of my head, I know the On-Campus Housing Application is due on June 8th and Financial Aid Forms are due on June 15th. There are a bunch more for test scores, transcripts, orientation, etc., but these are the ones that are coming up soon.
@fashionista99 Thank you! Now I feel less rushed haha
@letstryround2 Haha yea don’t worry. The main deadline is just the June 1st for accepting their offer. They wouldn’t put any important deadlines before that
Guys I am debating going to UCSD as a transfer this year for Cognitive science with a specialization in machine learning and neural computation, or staying in CC another year. I was crushed when I did not get into my top 2 options, I am not sure if it would be a smart financial decision to attend UCSD, I live in LA area and was hoping to commute to UCLA, and I got waitlisted at cal but was told if I get in I have a shot with CS as it shares many prereqs with Cog sci there. Any advice? Low income. I was shocked all prereqs done, tap certified, great essays, amazing extracurriculars.
BTW I’m willing to take on the debt from Berkeley because for CS/Cog sci it has one of the highest average salaries for college programs in the US. I am wondering if cog sci at UCSD will provide me with software engineering opportunities seems like many students in Cog sci end up in Ui/UX or go off to grad school.
@“UCLA22CogSci/LINGCS” So there’s two key questions you’re asking (or the way im reading it): 1). If I go to UCSD will I be successful? and 2.) Should I go to UCSD or wait and apply next year for UCLA/UCB? . For the first question, the school doesn’t define you and your success, you will absolutely be successful if you put in the work to go to UCSD, ace your classes, find internships, and get a job afterwards. Will it be easy to get a job right away? Well you probably have done more research, so maybe yes maybe no, but you will go where you need to go
Now for the second question NOBODY BUT YOU can answer. Nobody here knows your upbringing, personality, traits, etc. so we are not fit to answer that question properly. Do some serious soul searching as to what’s important to you and know that there is no wrong answer. If UCLA/UCB is really important to you, then choose to pursue that. If you feel UCSD can be a great school for you, then choose that. There is no wrong choice, but for you there may be one that is more fitting for your personality. All of these schools will give you a great education and you should be proud to have gotten into UCSD. And if you choose to say no to UCSD and take a chance, well that’s amazing too. They’re both gonna turn out amazing. Right now you’re driving in the middle of a two lane highway, choose a side and stick with it. I wish you the best of luck in choosing.
It really sucks to not get into your top schools. Especially when you’ve put your blood, sweat and tears into getting where you are today. However, you say that you’re done with everything and are ready to transfer. In my opinion, only, I think it’s better if you just go to UCSD.
I mean, what are you going to be doing in the next year if you are done with all of your classes? What if the same thing happens and you get rejected or waitlisted? UCSD is a good school for cogsci and there’s a good group of people out there who are working towards their goals. I believe that people are capable of achieving anything they put their mind to, but I’m also realistic in that you have to set attainable goals. UCSD offers great opportunities for your major, so I’ve been told by my roommates with your major.
Let’s say you decide to stay another year and try and wait it out. What will you be doing? Volunteering and working? Staying home? Taking online certificates? Looking for internships? What will you be doing for a year to stay on top of the game and amp up your application by the time the next application is up? Is all that time and effort worth it? If so, by all means go ahead and good luck. Stay productive, focused, and safe during these corona times. If you decide to go to UCSD, then congrats and welcome.

uci:

i can take biochem and microbio as part of my major
PLS HELP
Does anyone know if UCSD allows us to take spring courses for P/NP?
@doseofu Hey! I’m pre-med and I just accepted my offer to UCSD as a Global Health major. Public Health was also one of my other options and I know that you can take bio courses for your major electives and if you need to take microbiology and biochemistry, you can petition for them, but that isn’t guaranteed to be accepted. Your GPA will depend on the courses you take and the courses that are available to you
With that said, your choice is dependent on what you think will work for you. Both UCSD and UCI are wonderful schools. If you need to save on money, maybe think about UCI. If you are okay with spending the money on dorms, then maybe think about UCSD.
If it isn’t too much to ask, what specifically is making you hesitant for either school?
from UC Admission FAQ.
Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, and Santa Barbara have agreed to accept Pass or Credit grades in major preparatory coursework completed in spring 2020 for all majors. Santa Cruz has agreed to accept Pass or Credit grades in major preparatory coursework completed in spring 2020 for all majors except Psychology and Cognitive Science.
Pass or Credit grades in major preparation are acceptable as noted above for admission purposes only; articulation of courses with Pass or Credit grades will be determined by the individual department after you enroll at UC.
