UC San Diego Fall 2020 Transfer Thread

@ fashionista99 one thank u so much for u reply!!! honestly im just scared i make the wrong decision ahh!! like at uci they require for PHS major that i take a lot of bio courses ( like genetics) and im much more of a chem person and at ucsd i wouldn’t have to take those courses butttt im pre dental so i need to take bio chem and microbio anyways. BUTT hahaha at ucsd i wanna minor in chem and i can take biochem as a part of it and only extra class wud be Microbio

@ fashionista99 also are u from SD area or u are moving too? also money isn’t the biggest issue its something that i can figure out as the time comes also i feel like id be happier at ucsd and I’m scared of going to UCi and not doing well bc of those classes

@fashionista99

@doseofu Of course, no problem! If you’re more into chem, definitely try to minor in it and keep your bio classes at a minimum. Taking the risk of going into classes you’re not strong in can tank your GPA and taking chem classes can boost your GPA if you feel stronger in them. I totally get you on that part since med school is my dream and I know I have to strategically plan my path for the greatest success within my timeline, which means knowing I have to take more bio classes. Also, depending on which college you are in at UCSD, taking a microbio class could count for a college’s upper div GE and not seem like just an extra course you have to take.

Also, UCSD has a free student-run dental clinic where you can volunteer at and if you have a dental assistant certification, I believe you can have more opportunities to get involved that way. I don’t necessarily know if UCI has these types of opportunities, but just getting involved in this or other volunteer opportunities will really show dental schools that you are a strong applicant.

I am from the San Diego area and UCSD has been my dream school since middle school. So if you can’t tell, I’m little biased towards it haha

But I am a believer in going to a college that you think will make you happy and successful. I know it’s pretty scary taking this risk, but wherever you go, I bet you’ll be fine. You’ll definitely find people who will help you out wherever you are in your pre-dental journey.

@fashionista99 hello!! i did not know that about UCSD and the clinic that is amazing and yes i do have my license as a DA !! I’ve been looking for signs all day and im taking u as my sign!! haha I got into MUIR so i think i don’t have many GE req!! but im rlly excited for UCSD!! i truly wish u the best of luck on ur journey to med school and hope to see you around :slight_smile:

@doseofu That’s wonderful to hear! And since you got into Muir, you’re basically set! I wish you the best of luck too and good luck on your pre-dental journey. Hope to see you around! ?

Hey guys! Just accepted my offer of admission to UCSD. I read the documents they wanted me to read and then I clicked on the button to accept my offer… but it redirected me to the homepage.

It didn’t ask me to pay anything. On the homepage I can see that I accepted my offer but I’m really anxious because I don’t know where to pay. UCSD never told me that they would waive my SIR fee but I did receive an application fee waiver for when I first applied so does that have anything to do with it?? Please help ?

@uclahopeful4 Hey! So since you received an application waiver, you’ll also get a SIR fee waiver. This happened to me too since I qualified to receive an application fee waiver at the beginning.

Omg that’s awesome ?. Thank you for letting me know! I’m so poor right now.

@uclahopeful4 Of course, no problem! Awww I know how you feel. I’m in your position too

Committed to USC today. Hope someone on the UCSD waitlist gets my spot! Good luck to you all

I really appreciate you taking out the time to help me. I always thought I was set, I had TAP for UCLA and was told by counselors and school reps I would be in for sure. I’m waitlisted at Cal for CS lol so I am still waiting on that. I have a Software engineering internship at Snap this summer and tbh I think I can succeed regardless of the school, just I would be able to help my fam more if I stay local(low income). I was baffled seeing a kid I tutored who was on academic probation for cheating with a 3.3 with much more opportunities get into my major while missing classes. I feel the need to prove everyone wrong. I even got into Columbia lolll but the aid package is atrocious.

@IBkidonthestreet if I stayed another year I would take more CS classes, and be learning languages on my own, so in theory, I would be doing a lot better in a lot of my classes regardless of where I go and will be able to have more free time to spend on projects. I am hoping to have real software engineering work experience before I graduate so I stand out. Idk if this is true but I heard most cog sci majors end up in UI/UX and I really want to be a backend guy maybe Ill do some full stack if I build my own startup but UI/UX doesn’t interest me.
