UC San Diego Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeals Discussion

Are appeals to waitlist reject decisions allowed by UCSD? And what is the Process?

You would need to contact UCSD admissions since not all UC’s will allow an appeal after a waitlist denial. The only appeal information posted for UCSD is for a denial on the original decision.

You can reach the Admissions Office by email or by phone at 858-534-4831.

Thanks a lot! Really really appreciate quick reply. Your kind contribution keeps cortisol levels down!
Is there a way to find out which UCs allow appeal after a reject from waitlists?
It would be useful to know for UCB, UCSD and UCSC.

For UCSC: Once all waitlist activities have concluded, students not offered admission from the waitlist will receive a final decision and may submit an appeal at that time.

UCB is similar to UCSD stating an appeal can be sent if denied from their original decision but no specifics from denials off the waitlist. Again, contact admissions.

In general, all waitlisted students are re-evaluated when spots open up so your application has been looked at several times before being denied. You would need Very compelling information to overturn their final decision.

I came across your post this morning, I think I have the answer.

From what we heard and learned, all UCs take appeals if you’re denied from original decision as UCs allow all applicants provide additional information which not included in original application. If you already accepted the waitlist decision, you cannot appeal the waitlist decision as you already provided additional info on waitlist optin form.

For some private schools, might allow the waitlisted file the appeal. My nephew filed the appeal weeks ago, his top choice is a top 9 school, not any UC. We know the chance is more slim than those who filed the appeals from original decisions.

Enjoy the school you committed to.

If you already accepted the waitlist decision, you cannot appeal the waitlist decision as you already provided additional info on waitlist optin form.

This is not necessarily true since only UCLA and UC Davis will allow students to list current Senior grades and have a comment section for updates. The rest of the UC’s will only allow you opt into the waitlist without updates.

UCSC does have an appeal option for waitlisted students denied admission which I linked. For the rest of the UC’s, it is best to contact admissions for confirmation.

My nephew only accepted the UCLA waitlist (he’s also waitlisted at UCD) and he had chance to provide additional accomplishments on waitlist opt-in form. If other UCs than UCLA and UCD don’t give applicants the opportunity to provide additional information this year, it doesn’t mean that UCs have waitlist appeal process. It’s better to call admissions office, but I highly doubt it.

No UC accepted appeals from denied waitlists in the past
When most of UCs started to remove the waitlist eassy? Just started this year?

UCSC has allowed appeals from denied waitlisted applicants for several years. Up until a couple of years ago, UCI, UCSC and UCSB allowed waitlisted applicants to file appeals while actively on the waitlist so policies do change that is why it is important to always check with each school.

Nice to know. I’ve never paid attention to UCSC, just the top 2 UCs.

From the UC Counselor Waitlist Fact sheet:

Freshman waitlist appeals

None of the campuses utilizing a freshman waitlist allow waitlisted students to appeal their admission
decision. Some campuses may allow students who are denied admission from the waitlist to appeal their decision once that decision has been made.

DELETED as you don’t have the information. The applicant needs to call admissions office and I’m not interested for now. I’m very interested in finding a cool place to survive the heatwaves! Stay cool

Anyone called UCSD and know if there is still a chance?

I think No point to call them. They will have same pre recorded message “End of the Summer😀”

It’s wrong for UC San Diego admission to make us wait this long to just get rejected. It’s been almost 2 weeks without any news or updates. It is extremely frustrating since there has been no recent activity.

Right, but if it’s an acceptance, I have already gotten so situated in my current school. I’ve formed strong bonds with my roommates and new friends. It would be a huge inconvenience to switch but a good opportunity

Please share if anyone gets any updates today.

Yeah, the campus visit really sold my son on UC Davis. We weren’t expecting it to be so green! And the bikes everywhere. He loved the “relaxed yet studious” vibe.

I just spoke to the director, and they said they’re gonna wait until late August. Too early to lose hope.

It’s too late.

UCSD is a wonderful school, but I feel like what they’re doing is so unfair to these poor kids. It feels like they’re trying to weed out the kids that simply give up and just don’t want to agonize over waiting anymore. You’re already behind the 8-ball even if your kid is accepted in August–housing, selecting classes, sending transcripts, sending AP scores, doing the required health requirements, opting in or out of health insurance, setting up email, etc. Yes, there’s still hope that the answer might be a ‘YES,’ but at what cost to your kid’s psyche, not to mention that of the parents who are equally vested in this process?
