UC San Diego Freshman Class of 2028 Waitlist/Appeals Discussion

Late August??? I have to make a decision by the end of this month to possibly start school in the next 20 days…

did they give you a reason why?

No, not really

You’re really not behind if you get accepted late. They don’t even get to the transcripts or AP credit until September or October. Health waiver isn’t due until after school starts, class sign ups aren’t until end of August.

OK good to know. How about housing?

WL students were all offered housing last year, so I assume it will be the same (there’s more housing this year). The only housing deadline that’s soon is to request specific roommates, but they do a very good job of matching up students.

What could possibly be the reason on why they aren’t sending waitlist offers and waiting until the end of august? I wish we had an explanation on all of this since there is no movement but the waitlist isn’t closed yet. It has me starting to stress out since we know nothing on availability. Everyday I am hoping for something to come through but every friday passes and nothing…

Same …

same…

yeah, it just feels kind of awful, cause i feel like they wouldn’t intentionally lead people on, and just start rejecting people / closing waitlist like davis and berkeley if they truly had no spots, but also there’s been zero news of any admits for weeks. the opt-out email makes me think its probably just for a tiny amount of end-of-summer melt spots / rescinds after transcripts are done processing, but why aren’t they rejecting any very unlikely admits right now to leave a small pool to fill melt (especially since they already did the opt-out survey)? seems like they were quite liberal with waitlist offers (as in offers to opt-in, not admit) this year, so they probably have quite a large amount on the waitlist still.

I’m just confused as to how literally 0 people from the entire Arts&Humanities department has gotten off the waitlist yet (from what I’ve seen). I don’t know my chances at all

it’s definitely weird that they aren’t rejecting applicants that they don’t have space for. In addition, we do not know if they are going to do one big wave. I wish they could explain the non movement for the majors that aren’t impacted. UC Davis did not admit applicants for 2 weeks and then they closed the waitlist. However, UC San Diego hasn’t closed the waitlist yet. I wish we all knew our odds of still getting in and how they choose from the waitlist. There has to be a secret criteria on all of us.

Yes, seems harsh that they can’t even let some of the students know if certain majors are full. Either give us some hope or cut us loose. It’s extremely frustrating!

I called AO they said waitlist for transfer students will close this month but for freshman it will close sometime in August. She did not even want to say mid Aug, late Aug? And refused to say if they will pull more people off the waitlist or not

Agree. UCSD was my D24 top choice and both my wife and I are alumni (not that it matters for admission) and is waitlisted. However, she gets into every other UC school. What’s up with that?!

Yeah. I was admitted to every UC but Cal and UCSD (which were my top schools). Trying to be happy being committed to UCSB but being on the SD waitlist keeps putting that what-if in the back of my mind even though I know the chances at this point are minuscule :joy:. Wish they would at least tell us why the waitlist is running so late.

Other way to think about this is that they don’t close the waitlist too early.

They want to make sure every spot has a chance to be filled and they don’t control how many SIR’d students decide to withdraw during the summer.

My daughter is committed to UCSB right now too. My son is there now and loves it in SB. The weather is amazing and the campus is so nice. It’s a great 2nd option

No interest in UCLA?

yes, this is hard waiting this late. Too bad we were not able to peacefully prepare for the current committed university.
