Just got rejected a minute ago. Looks like all that waiting was merely a soft rejection all along…

Also got rejected from the waitlist. Currently happily committed at UCSB, though!

Looks like enrollment capacity has been reached! They could have done this months ago. The girl is happy with UCD. Onwards!
My daughter has been committing happily with UC Davis. In fact, she got accepted to all of other UC’s except UCLA and UCB. We just could NOT believe how UCSD chose to waste all of this year’s waitlisted students and the parents’ times in this process. What a shame to UCSD admission team behaviors comparing to the other 8 UC’s this fall 2024!
I understand the frustration, but am curious what process you would have liked them to follow.
Should they not have a waitlist at all?
Should they leave slots open when SIR’d students switch to another school mid-summer?
Should they accept more from the waitlist even if they don’t have any housing for those students?
If colleges can model the yield and admit people in march, why can’t they model the summer churn and admit people from the waitlist in june?
Well, it’s a lot easier to model the 80-90% part of the number and have room for margin of error. We have all seen colleges suffer when the yield model is exceeded by just a percent or 2.
When you get close to making a more precise landing, you don’t want to rely on macro models. It’s a pinch of salt here (a few psych majors) and a pinch of salt there (mech eng majors.)
IMO
I agree with you. However, I suspect that the general consensus regarding the frustration comes from UCSD dragging this into August. I do think mid-July would’ve been acceptable, but giving a response on August 6th gives unnecessary hope and probably causes even more of a heartbreaking experience when receiving a rejection notice. I sympathize with all these kids.
Understood. Part of that problem is that UCSD instruction doesn’t start for SEVEN MORE WEEKS! This is incongruent with all the semester schools that start instruction in the coming 2-3 weeks.
So it seems like UCSD is late, but in fact, their schedule makes a lot of sense in the context of their academic calendar.
Yes, but as you said, some kids start their already-committed-to schools in the end of August. Regardless of when UCSD starts, they need to be mindful of this and the fact that kids need to make a big, life-altering, decision with ample time to spare. Dragging this out until August 6th is not fair to these poor kids, when some kids need to start school literally in 2-3 weeks. We can agree to disagree. No worries.
im confused i didnt recieve a rejection letter and am still in the waitlist ![]()
bio major btw
D24 denied. However, she is all set to attend Cal. Go bears!
May I ask why did you choose to stay on UCSD waitlist when your kid got into all these other UCs? Just to check if you get this one in your kitty too? There are qualified kids who need to go out of state because of this rubbish system.
UCSD, please admit that the university mistakenly accepted too many students for both of their freshmen and transfer waitlists, then selfishly kept extending their decision dates to cruelly mislead many innocent students and parents despite of UCSD admission team’s well acknowledgment of their enrollment capacity throughout this whole process for many months since March!
The information/rejection is posted below the waitlist graphic on my son’s applicant portal.
I hope that UCSD admission team will learn well from their mistakes made during this admission year for Class of 2028 to prevent their history from repeating again in the future, since the UC Application Portal has been opened since last Thursday for Class of 2029🙏
I doubt they really care. They made their numbers and fulfilled their goals. This rejection hurts but we have to move on. Such is life.
