I’m shocked he was waitlisted even after attending UCSB SRA. He should be a shoo-in for admission and I hope he does get in.
Daughter was accepted to CCS Marine Science.
He has great acceptances, and no good reason to be depressed. I can understand disappointment, but he should really view several of those acceptances as great opportunities. What his high school peers think is irrelevant, and is probably the source of his depression. He should know that high school students know nothing (doesn’t matter how many AP or DE they have taken), and are mostly engaged in some sort of warped status signaling game. At a minimum several of those schools have very strong programs in CS. The location of UCSC is great both in terms of the spectacular campus and proximity to companies he could intern at. ASU and UC Riverside have very strong programs in CS with top notch faculty. Other programs listed may be good as well it is worth digging into the nuts and bolts of each program: curriculum offered, club opportunities etc…
Does he want the CS degree or the “brand” name? Your son has excellent choices and will receive an excellent education, which will lead to an excellent career. A different “brand” may not provide any additional benefits. BTW I know a student at UCSC CS who loves the program.
Got a NO from CCS today.
My son applied to physics too, still waiting to see if he has heard.
We got email couple of hours back. Our evidence of talent was week and hastily done. Hope it works out for your son.
The UCSC and UCR physics departments in particular (CU Boulder maybe as well) are great.
UCSC Astrophysics is dope if your son is interested in that.
Agreed! My son did UCSC SIP (Summer Internship Program) in Astrophysics and the professors were amazing.
Oh my goodness. My son got accepted to College of Creative Studies-Physics.
We were hoping that would’ve helped. Oh well, I guess at least he’s on the waitlist and we will keep our fingers crossed =)
Congratulations! My daughter was also accepted CCS Physics. I just spoke with an acquaintance whose son is in his first year of the program. She could not say enough good things about it and how much he loves it. He loves all of his professors and class sizes are under 20 which is incredible as a freshman at a UC. I’m not sure if your child is still in the decision-making phase, but perhaps that will help.
Thanks a lot for explaining. He had two B+s in AP classes. I wish your younger teens the best. I keep telling myself there is light at the end of the tunnel. I really don’t care about prestige. I just want him to be happy and use his potential to benefit himself and society.
I keep telling him the same thing, and you are right. When we were preparing for the applications, he was okay with UCR, SDSU, CPP, CSU, UCSC, and Penn State, but after talking to his friend, he wasn’t happy anymore.
I suspect he’ll adjust and be fine once he gets to his destination and settles in, and finds new peers who are all in it together.
Congratulations to all of those admitted to CCS. I think that was more acceptances than we’ve seen on CC in several years.
If your student decides to enroll at UCSB CCS, please stick around to share your experience with future applicants.
Is there something like the CDS of a college that explains what CCS looks for, historical data, etc.? Trying to figure out what went wrong with the math CCS application.
I do not know. CCS is a very small college with less than 400 students.
There was likely nothing wrong with your math CCS application. CCS can only admit so many students and, unfortunately, that means that some very qualified applicants are not admitted.
People can still apply to CCS in later semesters, you could contact them and ask about that option.
