Visit campus if you can. The campus here is truly stunning! If you come for open house there should be people from the Chem E department to answer any questions you have.

UCSB also has really good BS/MS programs, you can start taking graduate classes early if you want a challenge.

@Horizon_cal

Some majors at UCSB admit new students to a “pre-major” status. This designation does NOT mean it is more selective or difficult to gain admission. This means that you must take a set of required courses and meet GPA requirements, which are determined by the department, in order to declare a full major. The UCSB General Catalog indicates (**) next to the majors at UCSB that have a pre-major status.

Guessing the line “We are unable to accommodate you in your first choice major due to the number of students who sought admission to that major.” means no ccs, right?

CCS decisions came out last year the next day after the regular admissions.

All students interested in any area of the biological sciences enter UCSB as pre-biology majors. The pre-major provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation for all the majors and provides students with opportunities to explore the subdisciplines of biology before deciding which biology major best fits their goals and interests. After completion of a subset of this key preparatory coursework, students may petition to declare one of the 10 biology majors. Over 150 upper division courses are available for students in these majors.

Molecular and Cell Biology is a sub discipline.

See gumbymom post earlier. UCSB accepts as pre for majors that don’t have direct entry. Your kid will have to declare in a couple of semesters

Since so many of the schools have their admitted students day/open house on the same day, is there any advice for how to prioritize? Is Santa Barbara’s Open house a “must see”?

Congratulations!!! Wow lots of Computer Engineering admits.

Depends on how highly you/your child ranks UCSB, but the Open House is generally pretty helpful, tons of information on everything from programs to academics to housing etc, every department is tabling.

you also get to see the beautiful campus! Santa Barbara is also a beautiful area in general so could be a good opportunity to explore State Street, Montecito etc.
