My son got off Poli Sci waitlist this past Wed, but I’ve heard about some kids getting off as late as Jul! Good luck!

My daughter got off waitlist 5/15 for History Public Policy & Law, but she seems to be leaning toward CalPoly.

How many days did they give your son to decide, 5 or 7 days? Trying to be prepared in case ours falls off the waitlist as late as July (hopefully sooner) for PoliSci. Did you son accept?

Has anything been released yet for computer engineering?

I saw one admit on Reddit for Computer Engineering May 5 In-state.

Do you think it’s likely for engineering waitlist to come off this late into May?

Historically, it was unlikely that many Engineering majors ever get off the waitlist so that said, it really depends upon if the admitted waitlisted Engineers this year, accepted their offer or not and if spots are still open. Until UCSB closes their waitlist, there is always a chance.

Hello Arlopop - I’m assuming your daughter did not get into UCB or UCLA per your note, given the high level of difficulty for engineering majors. Is this the case, and is she also waitlisted for UCSB and UCSD? I only ask to help my son recognize the degree of difficulty these days, he’s a CS major and is also waitlisted at UCD and UCSD. Your daughter was able to accomplished a remarkable amount, congratulations!

Thank you. She is rather ambitious, and decided early on she would push hard. We are proud of her, though we hope she finds time to actually stop and smell the roses at some point.
And yes, she didn’t get an acceptance from UCLA. The school doesn’t offer admittance for alt majors and she applied mech eng with, I believe, a 2% acceptance rate. It was a definite reach.
Berkeley was a no as well, though getting no acceptance at all was a bit surprising.

She has committed to her alt major at UCSB - Chem - but is on the mechanical engineering waitlist. By accepting admittance she remains on the waitlist and if a spot were to open up in engineering she could be offered an admittance to it at any time during her freshman year.

She is also on the eng waitlist for UCSD.

She was admitted for Bio Eng at Merced with a scholarship, and admitted for the same major at UCR into a 5 year BS/MS program.

CalPoly SLO accepted her for mech engineering as well, but as she went through this whole process she began to realize she fully intends to go to grad school and thinks she wants to end up in genetic bioengineering or perhaps materials eng. So she felt an undergrad degree in Chem or Biochem was the best foundation for that, and decided UCSB was her best option.

That said, she is also waitlisted at Vassar and at Pomona College. Since a Chem degree is what she’s interested in, coming off the list for Pomona would be very enticing to her.

It’s been an insane year for kids: a record number of applications with a lot kids who otherwise would have gotten into top schools but have been left on the outside - waitlisted or simple rejected.

I hope your son has other admittances to fall back on. My daughter got Fresno and San Jose, Boulder and Case Western, as her “just in case” schools. Wherever your son goes success is available to be had. CS is especially crowded and I’ve known stellar students - classmates of my oldest who is at UCSB as well - who didn’t get acceptances the last couple years. Some of them pivoted to mathematics or econ/accounting.

As I told my daughter throughout the highs and lows of this process, “Where you ultimately go to school does not define you; only you define you. Bring your best and it will be returned to you.”

I wish your son the best.
And you as well - it’s hard being supportive yet realistic throughout this process.

My D25 just received an acceptance off the Waitlist this evening with her first choice major of Psychological and Brain Sciences. We are in state. She is going to take a few days to decide, but has fallen in love with Cal Poly SLO, and I expect she will decline the offer.

My son just received his email to check the portal AND…he’s off the waitlist for Pre-Econ (in state). He was accepted to UCD & SDSU and declared at Davis but UCSB has always been his first choice. So he (and ME  are ecstatic! Thank you to this amazing forum that has kept our hopes alive. What a rollercoaster!

Got off waitlist today for Computer Engineering

had the same exact experience

Congratulations! Best major

Will also add that if her intention is to go to grad school, a university that specifically focuses on research like UCSB will provide her with more opportunities. Cal Poly is a good school but their focus is more on practical education / training rather than cutting edge research.

Congratulations! May I ask if you were first accepted for your second choice major? Or was it computer engineering right away? My son is waitlisted for computer engineering as his first choice, but got accepted for his second choice, applied math, last Thursday. I’m wondering if he can still get off the waitlist for computer engineering after submitting an SIR.

My first choice is Computer Engineering. Second is Pre-Applied Mathematics.
