My son was admitted today for History of Public Policy and Law (his first choice major for UCSB), in-state. SIR deadline is May 20.

He was admitted last week to UC Davis, and has done his SIR and housing application for UCD. We don’t know yet if he will accept UCSB over UC Davis.

What is the UCSB housing situation for waitlist admits at this point. I’ve seen a May 15 deadline on some UCSB website, but I don’t know if there’s a later one for WL admits. Has anyone seen a later deadline? Can you cite a website?

I just saw that if you’re accepted after the deadline, you get 5 days to complete. But I’m not sure about the ones admitted today. Seems unfair they would only get one day.
Late Admits

Freshmen who are admitted after the housing deadline are able to qualify for priority housing consideration within five days of their SIR date.

Thank you for your reply!

I saw that same timeline, and scrolled to the May 15 Housing Application Deadline, and didn’t scroll beyond (on my phone) and read all the other parts.

I will email housing tonight. Little reason to consider making a change by May 20 if there’s no prospect of housing. (I will update here with what I hear back.)

(Also, after I posted my question, I saw that Gumbymom replied to my broader query about waitlist timeline, and pointed out this same “additional five days” concept. I never considered we might get an admission decision just one day before the housing deadline.)

yes

not in admissions but anecdotally, waitlist admits all get housing. There’s effectively a housing guarantee for freshmen, I’ve never heard of freshmen not getting housing.

plus the housing situation here isn’t as bad as some people say, especially in recent years.

Any news about a wave today? SB local and I’m losing hope.

My daughter is a freshmen and lots of her friends came off the WL last year. They had no problem with housing. The housing process doesn’t start until June with actual room picking starting in July, so I wouldn’t be concerned at all unless SIR in mid to late June. There is plenty of housing, though it is a lottery system so depending on the date your child gets to pick a room they might not get their ideal dorm location(some freshmen end up in the towers that are a 1/2 mile off campus). Each dorm has pros and cons and there are lots of youtube videos about them. My daughter got into UCSB and UCDavis and knew UCSB was the perfect fit for her and it has been. I wouldn’t let housing be the reason to go to UCSB or not as there are many differences between the two schools that are more impactful than what dorm they live in for 9 months.

i just signed my housing contract and there wasn’t an option to indicate preference for location etc. is that something that we can do in june/july?

Yes, you will receive more instructions in June along with your randomnly selected time to pick rooms in July. UCSB doesn’t assign dorms by your preference. You pick your own room depending on what is available when you log in. This video does a good job of explaining the process. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA0f25VjXgOPybm7UWoHDwrZBKoPXt3v0 Their website is also has great info so look through it all. I just called housing and they said students admitted late are given 5 days for housing after they SIR. The 5/15 date does not apply to them.

I heard back from UCSB housing. The email wasn’t definitive but it did refer to 5 to 7 days beyond the SIR. Also they referred to an email that my son should receive that will explain the timeline. (No such email received yet.)

DS (OOS) was taken off of the waitlist for Physics major on 5/15. given that UCSB is very well known and highly ranked for physics (and talking to few gratures about department), he decided UCSB as number 1 priority. But waitlist did make him very uncomfortable and after a long discussions/debate chose to accept Schreyer’s honor’s program at Penn state instead. so someone else can have my son’s spot now. very best wishes to folks on waitlist.

Yes, ds got off the waitlist on Tues 5/13 – in state, cs. He will be declining so hopefully someone here will get the spot. Good luck everyone!

Has anyone heard from Political Science majors coming off the waitlist yet? It seems we have heard of all others coming off so far (CS, Eng, Physics, Psych, Bio, Comm, History) but I’ve yet to hear from families we know or online for PoliSci. Fingers crossed as UCSB is our student’s top choice still
.

Declined my in-state pre-bio offer, also hope someone gets the spot!
