Each university is looking for different attributes in an applicant. UCSC obviously liked what they saw. They awarded the Regents scholarship because they really want you to enroll at UCSC. Congratulations!
Congrats to you and your son. My son’s stats are similar to yours. He was also accepted into UCSC Computer Science.
Thanks a lot. Congrats to your son too. Has he decided where he goes? Who knows, maybe they will become classmates.
Many Regents scholars will gain admission to a higher ranking UC and choose to go there. So I would believe there are only 50 Regents scholars attending UCSC each year. But the proportion of those offered it who attend is likely to be much lower than the 12% overall yield rate. I’d estimate to get 50 Regents scholars attending, they have to make at least 600-800 offers, which would correspond to ~1% of applicants.
i also just got an email that i’m receiving both a dean’s scholarship and a regents scholarship! i’m replying to my comment so you can see my stats if that helps let me know if anyone needs more info!
Haven’t decided yet. We’ll be waiting for the waitlist results from UC Davis and UC Irvine. (another long slog…)
Just make sure you do deposit somewhere by the enrollment deadline. Most waitlist offers come after enrollment deadlines.
Although it’s always a possibility, much better to plan and get excited for one of the places admitted to and then be pleasantly surprised and excited if a waitlist spot comes through
Thanks. I’ll ask him to keep that in mind. My son says he wants to take a gap year before he starts college. Except for UC Davis, the other UC campuses do not let admitted students do this without a compelling reason of some sort. Do you know of anyway that we can get a deferred enrollment (of one year) at UC Santa Cruz?
We don’t know if we’ll get it again if we apply next year. Do you know if UC admissions look at a gap year after high school negatively, if we apply again next year? He will make sure not to take any college classes after this summer, to keep the freshman applicant status.
I think he’s unlikely to be granted a deferral at the UCs (not sure Davis’ deferral approval rate), so he would need to reapply next year.
I’m sure your family are very proud of you. It must be those debate championships that was the clincher.
UC Davis is the most deferral friendly UC. That said, you can contact UCSC about a deferral but I would not count on that option.
thank you so much! yes, 4 years of debate is very hard work but so worth it. good luck to you!!
Do you know if taking a gap year after high school would look negatively on UC’ applications next year? (providing he is still eligible to apply as a freshman. He may take some community college courses during this summer, but not after that)
Yes, taking a gap year is an option and will not impact his chances if he reapplies for next year but make sure he does something meaningful during his gap year.
This is from Ms. Sun’s UC website:
Gap Year – if you are thinking about taking a gap year, you may still take community college courses (but ONLY during the summer term immediately following high school graduation). You will still qualify as a freshman applicant as long as you do NOT enroll during a REGULAR term (fall or spring for community colleges on the semester system; fall, winter, or spring for community colleges on the quarter system). Beware that some UCs may inadvertently disqualify you for freshman admission if you have ANY community college courses after high school graduation; make sure to provide an explanation in “Additional comments” that you ONLY enrolled in the summer term immediately following high school graduation and therefore still qualify as a freshman applicant.
Are we allowed to take summer courses at CC (any GE courses of UC ) before joining UC in the fall as Freshman?
Yes, you can take CC courses only in the summer term after HS graduation to maintain your Freshman status.
You’re a freshman or first-year applicant if you’re currently in high school, OR you’ve graduated from high school, but haven’t yet enrolled in a regular session (fall, winter, spring) at a college or university.
The following is from the UC application website. It specifically says that courses during the summer after graduation from high school do not disqualify from freshman status:
Please note: You’re a freshman applicant if you’re currently in high school OR have graduated from high school, but have not enrolled in a regular session (fall, winter or spring) at a college or university. (If you’ve completed college courses during high school, through the summer after graduation, you’re still considered a freshman applicant.)
UCSC has a Summer Edge program where you can take courses over the summer at UCSC. Summer Edge type programs help students acclimate to their new school.
Thank you so much for the Forum Champions and Ram_w for the clarification.
