UC Schools

To start off, I know that a lot of similar questions have been posted but a lot of the answers seem to contradict each other and would just like some clarification. Thank you!
For UC’s, how much of an impact does freshman year in highschool hold? Also, do senior year letter grades count for first semester? I do know that UC’s will look at the difficulty and challenge the classes in senior year present but I just would like to know if the letter grades have a heavy impact. Thank you.

Are there any suggestions on which teachers (as in math teacher, english, etc) I should ask for letters of rec? Just wanted to get letters of rec. to have if needed.

Your freshman year grade have no impact whatsoever as long as you made a C or above in every class. Your senior grades don’t count towards GPA, and correct me if I’m mistaken, and this applies to about 99% of the colleges out there.

As always, your first semester senior year grades are viewed by adcoms, and the more holistic of the UCs (Berkeley, LA, SD) take into account the rigor of your courseload.

As for recs, I would suggest getting recs from teachers who taught a class that’s closely related to your desired major, but really it’s up to you. Which teacher do you think really understood your passion for learning? Which teacher can best explain and connect your personal interests? But try to concentrate it within your junior and senior years, and maybe your sophomore year if the class you took was relatively rigorous.

Good luck!

I don’t think UCs accept letters of rec.

You’re right, they don’t. But it’s still a good idea to keep in mind when applying to colleges that do.

For UCs, senior year grades become visible on your final transcript. UC admission offers are conditioned on completing the senior year courses with high enough grades. Every summer, there are students posting “will I get my UC admission rescinded after getting a D in a senior year course?”

Thanks for the swift responses all!
