UC Statewide Index Question

I have a question about what the UC’s call “Your UC GPA” on the Statewide Index Page, vs. the 3 UC GPA’s calculated on Rogers Hub:

https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/admission-requirements/freshman-requirements/california-residents/statewide-guarantee/admissions-index-instructions.html

Pretty sure we are doing all the calculations correctly, but the UC GPA we get from this formula does not match (exactly) any of the 3 Rogers Hub GPA’s. My guess is this should match the UC WC GPA?

Also, curious about thoughts regarding this paper from 2021 and whether ELC/Statewide Index are used interchangeably - it does not appear to be the case. Would love to find a similar document that has been updated if it exists and anyone has access.

Ultimately I’m interested in the extent to which SI has an effect (if any) on admissions to some of the more highly selective campuses vis-a-vis holistic/admissions criteria.

The general consensus seems to be ‘ELC/SI is only about offering you a space @ UCM and has no effect’ but it’s hard to imagine that is the case when considering competitive applications. The above referenced chart seems to imply that for some UC’s at least, the ELC designation (but perhaps not SI) improves acceptance chances at many campuses.

Thoughts?

This is what the UC counselor information states:

We have two paths to UC that recognize and reward the academic accomplishments of the state’s best students. Both paths guarantee a spot at UC - though not necessarily to the campus of choice - to top California resident students throughout the state as well as those at the top of their individual school’s graduating class (participating high schools only).

So according to the UC Counselor information, both are used interchangeably.

Also ELC eligibility is listed on the UC application as one of the criteria used for the application review so yes being ELC is an advantage in the UC application review.

Once the student submits their UC application, you can log back into the UC application and then go to the link that says “View how your application is viewed” it should show if the student is ELC eligible. A student can be both Local and Statewide ELC but it will only show that they are ELC on the application.

Some HS’s will notify their students if they are ELC eligible (Local).

I have tried the manual method and the Rogerhub calculator and came up with the same Capped weighted UC GPA. Remember you can only have a maximum of 8 semester Honors points in the capped weighted calculation regardless of how many eligible Honors courses are taken 10-11th grades. The Fully weighted UC GPA will account for the additional Honors classes taken.

There have been numerous examples of students that are Statewide ELC and not Local ELC and have gotten into various UC Campuses so I do not see that there is a major preference for local vs. statewide in the admissions process.

Regarding the ELC study referenced, this study was done in 2021 but starting in Fall 2022, the Statewide index was changed to exclude test scores since the UC’s went test blind so the Statewide index became more GPA based similar to the local ELC although calculated differently.

I have not seen any new reports similar to the 2021 report.

My impression is that unlike ELC, the statewide eligibility is not considered as one of the evaluation criteria (ELC is number 3 of 13). All it gets you is an offer to UCM if you aren’t admitted to any other UC that you applied to. Of course some statewide eligible students will get admitted elsewhere (my S23 was one of them) but that doesn’t mean that status was actually considered in the decision process.

The “maximum of 8 points” added for honors courses indicates that it is the weighted-capped GPA. This should match the weighted-capped GPA from the Rogerhub calculator.

Thanks to all - we had forgotten to cap at 8!

Been thru it once before but never using the UC page instructions - just couldn’t figure out why #'s weren’t matching! (must be a weekend!)

D23 was also statewide and widely admitted - hard to say for any of us I guess if it makes more or less of a difference, sometimes we just hope for answers we won’t get (especially if they work in our kids favor!)… :person_shrugging:
