So I originally started off at CSUF as a freshman in college, stayed there two years and did well(deans list), went to a community college and transferred to UCD. I had to defer for winter when I got accepted because of family issues, and I started and stayed two quarters. Midway through winter quarter I dropped a course without realizing you had to petition for part time status taking 11 units instead of 12. So I was placed on minimum progress. After a successful spring quarter, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. I moved back home to take care of her, and didn’t take summer school and didn’t take fall classes. It’s really stupid but when your world is falling apart you don’t think or care about deadlines and such. I’m about to be dismissed for minimum progress this week, if they don’t allow me to withdraw. My biggest concern is my mother, and my senior status at Davis affecting my ability to transfer elsewhere to finish. Can I transfer somewhere with senior standing after being dismissed? Will I have to pay out of pocket because I’ll no longer qualify for financial aid?
You need to contact an academic counselor at UCD and present your situation. Transferring at this point would be difficult and expensive in that another university might ask you to do additional work in order to get a degree. Universities know that students have life problems, especially family illness. You should be ready to show proof of illness and document your situation – and then ask UCD what they require for you to return. I believe UCs specify requirements for a possible return after an academic dismissal, but again, you need to check your specific situation at Davis. If you live closer to CSUF, then another option might be for you to return there and finish your degree, but I have no idea what that entails and whether they would take you or what they would require. If that is what you’re thinking, then you need to contact them.
as i said in the other post, you need to work with the school to see what they are willing to do. Do not just walk away and be dismissed, it will complicate things down the road. With just a quarter or two to go, transferring is probably not the best path. You might be able to find enough on-line courses to maintain your status while you help your mom, then return for a quarter to wrap up your degree.
Good lcuk.
