UC Subject Test Requirement

Hello parents, I’m trying to solve a friendly argument between my mom and me. She applied for college the fall in 1986 and ended up at UCSB. I heard that UCs used to require subjects tests, so I asked her which ones she took. She swears she didn’t take any. I guess my question is what year did UCs start requiring subject tests? I’m not sure if this is the right place to post, but because you guys are older than the average posters on the UC threads, I thought this would be a good place to ask. Thanks.

Back in the 1980s, they were called Achievement Tests, not SAT Subject Tests (or SAT II Tests), and they were required for frosh admission to UCs from what I remember. If I remember correctly, they required English Language (then a multiple choice grammar test, later replaced by an essay test that was eventually moved into the SAT Reasoning as the Writing section), Math Level 1 or 2, and a third one (not sure what limits there were, although obviously a second math test would not count).
