UC vs. CSU ??

My daughter was accepted to the UC ELC program:

[Welcome to ELC](http://www.ucop.edu/sas/elc/)

She was also pre accepted to UC Davis.

The trouble is finding a UC school that we can afford and one that offers classes Broadcasting/Film/TV/ Journalism, etc.

She seems to think that State colleges are “beneath” her and that she has earned (4+.0 GPA) Honors/AP, etc.) her way into the UC sysytem.

Her first round SAT’s were only 1680 but she is sure she didd much better a month ago but we don’t have those yet.

So, is a degree from a UC vs. CSU really that big of a deal in the real world?

thx

Hi Bob! Congratulations to your daughter on her ELC status. For 2009, the ELC guaranteed campuses are UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, and UC Merced. (pages 3 and 4: http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/educators/counselors/resources/materials/CC_2008/08_Fresh_Matrix.pdf</a> ) That means she is guaranteed acceptance to those five schools. She can apply to one or all of them and will be accepted to all five. (She must apply by the Nov 30 deadline - even to UCD - complete all A-G requirements, SAT or ACT plus two SAT subject tests and graduate from high school to complete eligibility.)

There are 23 CSUs, and many of them have majors in the areas she is considering - Steven Spielberg is a graduate of CSU, Long Beach, for example. She can investigate campuses here: CSUMentor

While the UCs tend to be a bit more prestigious, all the UCs and CSUs provide an excellent education. None of them would be “beneath” her. She has lots of GREAT options - what a great time for her!

It is very important for you to talk with her NOW about the costs of college. She can apply to the schools of her dreams without regard to cost as long as she also applies to schools you KNOW you can afford. Fill out the FAFSA, apply for scholarships, hope for great financial aid, but have a plan in case the money comes up short. Good luck, and congratulations on your daughter, Bob!

Thx, alamemom!

Appreciate the info and the encouragement!
