she was admitted as a freshman to both UCLA and berkeley, chose UCLA, spent ONE quarter there, and immediately regretted it. She did admissions by exception, not even within the proper filing period, and was admitted as a sophomore transfer.

my friend got accepted to ucb and ucla with a 3.2 and did not even file update by the deadline…it was like a week late…also she got a pretty bad grade in one class and had to retake it…i am kinda shocked. I read her essay and it was good though. so its possible

So do transfer students from CC qualify for admission by exception?? With 2.9 gpa as a psych major, I am going to apply to uc’s this fall (uci being my target) and I don’t know If my chances are good because the admission rate has gone down by 4% this year.

Are there any downsides applying to get admission by exception??

You all should note that being a transfer student they often do not read your essay… so if you want to apply for admission by exception make sure to contact them instead of just writing about your exception.

i think admission by exception is reserved for situations where someone had a major illness or something and never graduated high school and is now getting back into the education sphere, like lets say someone had cancer. Or if someone went to the army/navy/etc for X amount of years and didnt satisfy regular admission requirements but has enough reasons and experience to justify the admission. Or lets say family circumstances that require you to be near your sick family members or near your infant or something to that effect where you can not just transfer but you NEED to attend their school.

I dont see how “my gpa sucks but i am not a moron” is really an exception as much as a cry for pity.

i told you guys, its not for regular students… its 99.99% used as another means
to get athletes into schools they otherwise would have no shot qualifying for academically.

usually transfer elegibility into a uc is typically published: 60 transferable semester units, and major prereqs completed with at least a “c”, and a gpa minimum. of course all of that varies by major and school. but if you desire to transfer BEFORE meeting those requirements then you may apply for transfer but must apply with intent to transfer through “admission by exception”. that’s what it means people, not a thing about stupidity. on the contrary if you are excepted to transfer though “admission by exception” you must have demonstrated to admissions that you are competent enough to be admitted earlier than usual.
