UCB: Admission by Exception, who's done it?

I’m applying to UCB this fall and was considering stating in my personal statement that I qualify for admission by exception.

My GPA is 3.5 and I know thats not below the criteria for admittance, I just want to see if anyone has actually done this and been accepted.

what do you mean by admission by exception? i.e. you’re missing a limb so you’re an exception so you should be admitted?

Check out the UC website, under the transfer section it talks about it. Here’s what it says:
Admission by Exception ([University of California - Admissions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/exception.html))
If you don’t meet the regular admission requirements, you may be eligible for Admission by Exception. You will have to demonstrate your ability and potential to succeed at the University.

Request for consideration for Admissions by Exception should be discussed in the personal statement portion of your application for admission.

If you think you qualify for Admission by Exception, contact the Admissions Office at the campus you wish to attend.

Let me know if anyone has heard of it or knows someone who’s used it to get into Berkeley. I just want to know if this actually works. ;)

Sounds a bit dodgy. Is there a pertinent exception that you might think to qualify for?

unless you can throw a 95 mph fastball or run the 40 in 4.3 you are barking up the wrong tree with admission by exception.

My friend did-

she was admitted as a freshman to both UCLA and berkeley, chose UCLA, spent ONE quarter there, and immediately regretted it. She did admissions by exception, not even within the proper filing period, and was admitted as a sophomore transfer.

my friend got accepted to ucb and ucla with a 3.2 and did not even file update by the deadline…it was like a week late…also she got a pretty bad grade in one class and had to retake it…i am kinda shocked. I read her essay and it was good though. so its possible

So do transfer students from CC qualify for admission by exception?? With 2.9 gpa as a psych major, I am going to apply to uc’s this fall (uci being my target) and I don’t know If my chances are good because the admission rate has gone down by 4% this year.

Are there any downsides applying to get admission by exception??

Why do you think they would admit you by exception?

You all should note that being a transfer student they often do not read your essay… so if you want to apply for admission by exception make sure to contact them instead of just writing about your exception.

Maybe…

If someone is super poor, mega pathetic, and ultra ■■■■■■■■, I guess any school will accept that person with hyper sense of pity.

i think admission by exception is reserved for situations where someone had a major illness or something and never graduated high school and is now getting back into the education sphere, like lets say someone had cancer. Or if someone went to the army/navy/etc for X amount of years and didnt satisfy regular admission requirements but has enough reasons and experience to justify the admission. Or lets say family circumstances that require you to be near your sick family members or near your infant or something to that effect where you can not just transfer but you NEED to attend their school.

I dont see how “my gpa sucks but i am not a moron” is really an exception as much as a cry for pity.

Hhmm, why not get accepted the normal way?

Do you think that I could apply for the fall semester by exception now? I know its really late, but other options totally fell through for me.

I have a 3.95 over 40 or so credits at a private university in california.

i told you guys, its not for regular students… its 99.99% used as another means
to get athletes into schools they otherwise would have no shot qualifying for academically.

usually transfer elegibility into a uc is typically published: 60 transferable semester units, and major prereqs completed with at least a “c”, and a gpa minimum. of course all of that varies by major and school. but if you desire to transfer BEFORE meeting those requirements then you may apply for transfer but must apply with intent to transfer through “admission by exception”. that’s what it means people, not a thing about stupidity. on the contrary if you are excepted to transfer though “admission by exception” you must have demonstrated to admissions that you are competent enough to be admitted earlier than usual.
