I received admission to Northeastern and UCSB, and was waitlisted at Davis. I’m trying to decide if I should accept the waitlist offer.

I’m going to be an English Major, with concentrations in Creative Writing, and want to go into publishing.

Is Davis’ English program worth waitlisting myself for?

I don’t know very much about Davis, and wasn’t really considering attending out of the three schools until i got the decision.

In fact, if anyone has an idea about which of the 3 schools has the best English program, that would really be appreciated. I don’t know which one to choose!

I can’t say which of the 3 schools has the best English program, but I can give you my impression of the English program at Davis. I am a science major, but I took A.P. Lit in high school. In my freshman year at UCD, I took the basic Intro English class that nearly everyone is required to take and was pretty discouraged by my fellow classmates. It felt like being back in high school, except this time I was in a regular English class instead of an A.P. one. I wasn’t challenged at all in this class and it was an easy A for me. Later in the year, I took a higher level English class where most people were Humanities/Social Science majors, but I still felt a distinct lack of enthusiasm and participation among my fellow classmates. Nonetheless, I was challenged in this class to improve my writing and actually had to work for my A.
On another note, I only have high praise for the English professors at UCD. The ones I have met are intelligent, engaging, and dedicated to their work.
So, if you feel that you could put up with a few dead-beat classmates until you get to upper-division English classes I would say go for it because the English professors here are amazing. On the other hand, you should remember that Davis is not known for its Humanity majors; it is a strongly oriented science and agricultural school and that is where most of the money goes.
Hopefully, this helps you a little bit in your decision making.
