UCF Deferred :(

I have applied to almost every college is Florida but my top choices were FSU, UF, and especially UCF. I applied for the Rosen College of Hospitality since that is what I want to get into, but, sadly, I was deferred. Now the long wait begins. Here are my stats:

3.9 uw GPA (7/565 rank)

9 AICE Classes with an AICE Diploma recipient

2 AP Classes

14 Dual Enrollment classes - AA recipient

SAT: 1090 (superscored)

130 Community Service hours

EC’s: BSU, Hospitality and Tourism Program Ambassador, National Honors Society, National English Honors Society, plus a list of outside activities within my church.

Certified: ESB

How long should I wait to expedite my decision?

I think the SAT was your issue?

What do you mean - how long should you wait?

They will give you a decision in regular decision.

In the meantime, has any other school given you an acceptance - so you have a school to attend?

Seems unusual to do so well with respect to GPA and class rank among a very large class and so poorly regarding the SAT.

Your class rank & GPA are indications of an intelligent, dedicated, motivated student, yet your SAT scores indicate otherwise.

In answer to your question, you just have to wait until RD decisions are released.

The CDS (Common Data Set) for the University of Central Florida lists the three most important factors for admission as:

Standardized Test Scores

Rigor of Secondary School Record

High School GPA

Class Rank is NOT important and Recommendations are not considered.

Which two AP courses and what were your AP test scores ?

P.S. While Standardized Test Scores, Rigor of Secondary School Record, and High School GPA are the most important factors considered for admission to UCF, next most important factor is the Application Essay. This factor, Application Essay, is within your control. If UCF will accept another writing from you to be added to your application file, then be sure to construct a compelling essay highlighting why UCF is your first choice school. Write in a clear & concise manner. This should help.

You do not want to be moved to the wait-list as very few are admitted from the wait-list. (Last cycle it was just under 4% of those accepting a spot on the wait-list who were offered admission.)

Has UCF asked for any materials, such as your mid term grades or a LOCI? Make sure to check your portal and make sure you send everything they require. Send a LOCI if allowed with any updates and state you will attend if accepted (if that is the case.)

Reminder that CC is supposed to be a friendly and welcoming place.

Yeah, I figured my SAT would be an issue but I’ve personally seen others admitted with similar scores so I thought it wouldn’t interfere with my status. Also, for UCF, it’s either Early Action or Rolling Admission till May 1st, so I was wondering if it’s causible to expedite my decision. I’ve been accepted into USF, FIU, and FAU as well so I’m looking into those in the meantime.

Unfortunately, I too wonder how I could do poorly on the SAT especially if I demostrated that I could do better. However, I didn’t think my SAT score should have been the reason all of my accomplishments were overlooked. I also know that class rank is not important for the decision process, I just wanted to add more to my portfolio to give more insight. I took AP Pre-Calculus (score: 4) and I’m taking AP English Literature this year and pray to get the same or better results. Thank you for the advice on the application essay because I was wondering if that may be possible during the Rolling Admission process.

Yes, they have asked for the midterm grades which I submitted along with every score I had. I don’t want to send anything that is binding which is why I’m relunctant to send a letter to them.

At this point I’d recommend you research and decide which is your favorite among your very nice acceptances. If you get into UCF down the road, it will be a bonus.

FWIW if you commit to a college and get into UCF later you can withdraw (do it in writing) from the first school and then commit to UCF. You will lose the deposit at the first first college.

A LOCI is not binding. Reiterate your interest in the school and major you applied to. Mention how you will engage at the school. Mention your hopefully strong midterm grades and any other accomplishments you’ve had since you submitted your app. Good luck.

Agree with @Mwfan1921 – if UCF does accept letters of continuing interest I would compose a short note that highlights your strong grades and any other recent accomplishments. If true, you can say if accepted you would attend. Sending LOCI doesn’t commit you to the school in any way.

They may not take LOCIs. You can ask. Have you followed their directions? You have great admits and nothing you do now will bind you. Congrats on the current admits.

I have been deferred. What does that mean?

Admission to UCF is more competitive today than at any other time in our history. We typically receive approximately 45,000 freshman applications for an incoming class of about 5,000. Freshmen students who receive a defer have had an initial file review but the admission committee needs more information before making a final decision. Students will be asked to submit additional academic credentials that include either first semester senior year grades, updated SAT, ACT or CLT scores, or in some case, both.

The Self-Reported Academic Record for Knights (SPARK) Form will open in January for students to input mid-year senior year grades.

Personally, I feel that the strong midterm grades would not be of significance because of my low SAT score. It’s worth a shot though.

Personally is irrelevant - you were deferred, not rejected.

They, not you, will decide.

FAU has a fine hospitality program. it’s a good admit. If you get into UCF, great - and you won’t decide.

If you don’t, you still have a great home!!!

Yes, I’ve read over this like a thousand times so I just thought it meant that I needed to improve my SAT score. However, I don’t want to schedule yet another SAT, do well-enough, and then still get rejected without all of my other stats being so much as looked at. But I guess I shouldn’t expect much.

It’s likely too late. You are in the RD pool. It’s not a huge deal.

Just wait out the decision and choose another acceptance if you don’t get in. Rosen is a tough admit.

You were not rejected - you act as if you were. If you were wait list I would agree but you weren’t. They simply said - let’s get one more set of grades.

Either way, you’re going to college next fall. Relax….stop being on here - go outside, play sports, hang with your friends. This will resolve itself soon enough when they announce RD decisions.

My bad, I did not mean to offend anyone on here. I’ve never mentioned not considering other options but rather stated I was looking to my other options. However, my topic of conversation is strictly about a the specifics of my UCF deferral because it’s my top choice. Additionally, I asked whether or not it’s wise to expedite my decision based on my current stats. I only wanted to get advice from others because I seen how inconsistent UCF is with their admission process.

There no expediting. And you didn’t offend.

They have “deferred” to regular decision. They will make the decision with all the other regular decision apps.

There’s no inconsistency here. Just wait til regular decisions come out and you’ll know.

Good luck

But other than waiting, there’s literally nothing to do - short of what they’ve asked for (which sounds like is mid year grades - because they want to see more about you b4 deciding).

Read what I put much earlier directly froM UCF on deferral. Post 12

Make sure to input your mid year grades.

I dont see where there is an expedited decision option but maybe I missed something. At this point I’d send in the updated grades and (only if allowed – I don’t know) a LOCI and await a decision.

You are done with the SAT as I don’t think you have time to study hard and get updated results before admission decisions are made. Note that the SAT is an exam meant for HS students so no reason to retake after graduation.

You have three fine college options. Time to focus on and choose from among those schools. Get excited about going to college.

If you ultimately get into UCF (I hope you do) that is great. But do recognize that:

–Many people end up at not their first choice college for all kinds of reasons (don’t get into, can’t afford, etc.)

-Your post-graduation success will be dependent on what YOU accomplish during college rather than which college you attend.

-Don’t let your self-worth be influenced by an admissions officer who reviews your application for minutes.

–Take a second and recognize how many people all over the world would give almost anything to attend a 4 year college in the US. Appreciate your position and your options.

Thank you! I’m out-of-state but would’ve liked to study my field in Florida, so it’s a bit much to take in. Probably should wait for them though and assess my other options.
