UChicago Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

I like Rubio and I think he might be the most electable candidate for the Republican party (although I am not pledged to that party when choosing between the two parties I line up more with the right)

I personally support Martin O’Malley. I feel as if he is what America needs at the moment and that he will bring about the appropriate change needed to move us forward.

@jacobpilawa I go to a public school, where most people are Christian. However, there’s a definite liberal trend in the school – though I wouldn’t exactly call my school to lean too far to the left. There’s some policies that would have to change before that could happen. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmm. As for who I want to win… I honestly cannot decide if I like Clinton or Bernie better. I think Bernie better matches up with my ideas and policies, but I think Clinton is more electable. She’s more moderate, and thus will appeal to a larger majority of the population than Bernie would, as he’s a radical liberal. :stuck_out_tongue: I love both of them, and since I won’t be able to vote in the primary, it won’t matter which one I favor more than the other. Odds are, one of my favorites will get the nomination, and I’ll be happy pretty much as long as Trump isn’t president, lol.

@TheGermanBadger I love Martin! He’s so presidential and simply has a focus that a president needs. It’s a shame that he has such little support, though. I feel like he’ll be the VP for whomever becomes the Democratic nominee, and thus nearly a shoe-in for 2020/2024 for the Democratic side.

I love Bossypants and Yes Please. Such funny books, I also love books by Bill O’Reilly although I know those may not be great recommendations for this thread :). I found a great (kind of creepy, which I love) book called Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. It’s so good, I highly recommend it!

@laylac64 That’s fair. I feel like he’s a very staple Republican candidate. He’s sort of the most rational (even though I don’t really agree with him on anything) candidate in that he isn’t COMPLETELY out there on his ideas (Lookin’ @ you Trump and Carson [and Cruz]).

Trump has made far too many enemies and I don’t think he would do well in a general election, Carson is sliding down in the polls gradually, and Cruz is too far right to be elected in a general election. I agree that O’Malley is a probable VP for the Democratic candidate and that Clinton would be more easily elected than Bernie @jacobpilawa

As @layla2016 said, I too am more left socially, but right when it comes to fiscal matters. I feel that Bernie has this unique allure to those in our generation based on is social and educational viewpoints. Personally, I find that democratic socialism has its positives and negatives, but it will be difficult for Sanders to be nominated over Clinton. That being said, the Republican party has a lot of potential in Rubio. It is interesting, however, to see that Jeb Bush does not have more popularity. It must stem from sentiment over his brother’s administration, but he is still a viable candidate.

@laylac64 I’m not sure about the whole electability thing, but we’ll see how it all plays out! It’s just so exciting that I’ll be able to vote! And for the record, Bernie did go to University of Chicago!

@AceSquad23 Agreed! I really did think that it was going to be an easy ride for Jeb. He honestly seems more centrist than his brother, but even then, George Bush was by no means a fiscal conservative! He spent a lot, but who knows. It’s just super fun to watch. :^)

I gave an extemp speech on Jeb Bush. He’d be a lovely candidate… if he wasn’t awful at actually talking and the likes. He’s very bad when it comes to debating with the other candidates, and that steals away a lot of his support. Plus, he has this weird thing where he claims he isn’t a Washington insider – yet his family is a political dynasty.

Go Bernie!
I fully support Bernie and his ideals. Clinton seems a bit too fake, though I’d take her over any GOP candidate any day.

No offense to any conservatives here, those are just my thoughts.

Anyways, my favorite book is John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. It’s a masterpiece.

I’m from Liberalassachusetts. Lol, but seriously, I am socially liberal on all issues (but take a center-right stance fiscally. I would personally vote for Clinton as my biggest concern is gun control. I personally believe Clinton will do more than Sanders. I do love Bernie’s aura though. And I think O’Malley would make a great VP. I really like his demeanor. And I think Clinton just in general will be able to get more done than Sanders. I am a contingent pacifist/just war theorist, so that also aligns me with the Democratic Party. I don’t believe we should be more involved in fighting ISIS. That should be up to Arab countries. And I think we should have legal immigration (Yes. Mr. Trump, that means Muslims even from Syria can come into the U.S. 65,000 people won’t do anything. That is about .02% of our population, if I did the math correctly.) Also, I believe that we need to switch over to more environmentally friendly things such as solar and wind power and sustainable energy. In the end, though, as long as we don’t elect Trump, Carson, Cruz, or Fiorina, I think we won’t die.

Jeb is actually sane. I feel bad for him because he’s so awkward and gets picked on so much by Trump.

I agree that Jeb is sane, but he is just such an awful public speaker. Rubio seems presidential even though I really don’t like his policies.

Did anyone watch Bernie’s interview with Killer Mike?

Socially and fiscally right and ready to put Rubio in office asap!!

I am moderate left. Depends on the issue though. Its hard being from the South. I actually recently stepped down from being on the national board of a Republican candidate to start my non-profit but politics from the inside are insane

@jarrett211 I couldn’t have said it better myself. I am a pacifist as well, and do not condone any foreign involvement unless human rights are directly being violated. Even then, I believe that nearly everything can come to diplomatic resolve, especially in coalitions such as NATO and the European Union.

@tutututututuru He is a really awkward dude. I am by no means right-leaning at all, so it is a little scary agreeing with him when he’s on stage with the other candidates. Of all the GOP, I like Kasich the most. Probably because he’s the most moderate!

Rubio does indeed seem the most presidential of the bunch, imo
