UChicago Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@jacobpilawa For sure. The debate showed the constructive (and destructive) abilities of communication. On one hand, we had Rubio and Cruz actually talking about the important issues that have to be addressed, but no education and gun control makes me rethink my statement haha. Then you had the Trump and Bush dynamic: speaking over one another, raising their voices, disregarding the moderators. Both sides just add to the interest. Just imagine how productive a debate would be where there was little bickering and all discussion of substantial issues. That would be a sight.

@AceSquad23 Exactly! I felt that, if anything, the banter between Bush and Trump can only affect their respective campaigns negatively. Meanwhile, people who are talking about actual, concrete issues (Rubio, Cruz, Kasich, even Christie to some extent) will only go up in the polls as time goes on. Imagine a debate where you could mute other people’s microphones!

I’m center-left if we’re talking about the two-dimensional political spectrum. Socially FAR left but a little more center in fiscal matters

@bella913 Hell yeah! Those series of interviews were so well done! Killer Mike is so eloquent and well-spoken!

@Indigoraccoon4 Yea I’m from the South too, so it’s hard to be extremely liberal

@jacobpilawa Muting microphones…does that mean we don’t have to hear Carson cough every 5 minutes lol? That would be fantastic, only until the candidates start blaming the press for “outlandish questions” and “mistreatment” (to be fair, some questions were used to bait certain negative comments, but that’s another story).

@jacobpilawa I loved that Killer Mike was so invested in getting his fans to learn about Bernie and vote, something that definitely needs to be encouraged more. And when they talked about MLK, I’m so glad they discussed going further with activism, even if the problem doesn’t directly affect you. I can’t wait until we see more interviews like this.

@tutututututuru I’m also an insanely huge fan of ASOIAF myself. When people are getting excited over star wars, I’m here counting the days to the release of Winds of winter. I also loved The Lord of the rings trilogy, and I was shocked by how great Hunger games was.

haha if our UChicago anxiety didn’t get us to 100 pages, our political debate will. You are all truly UChicago material :))

@hope1938 I feel like as much as we really do care about politics, talking on this page s the only decent distraction from the impending fate that awaits!!!

@shakespearedoc THAT WAS LOWKEY MY PLAN. I JUST NEEDED DISTRACTIONS BECAUSE I FINISHED FINALS TODAY. I HAVE NOTHING TO DO. EXCEPT PANIC.

I think its so interesting to hear liberal perspectives when I’m usually the exception. Majority of my School is Rubio or Trump. We have a small dedicated Bernie group though.

Has anyone here ever worked on a campaign?

Are any of you interested in pre-med or any pre-professional programs? If so, where have you applied? I applied to the pre-med programs at Rice, Case, WashU, and Northwestern…

@AceSquad23 No pre-professional programs, but I pass by Case’s campus everyday, and I’m there almost every Saturday! Remarkable school!

@Indigoraccoon4 I volunteer for Bernie’s! Canvassing, debate parties, etc., if that counts for anything! Never interned for a campaign though, if that’s what you mean.

@jacobpilawa Lol are you in NE Ohio too?

@AceSquad23 Yeah, are you!?

@Indigoraccoon4 I wish I could’ve worked on a campaign although I did go to a debate watch party for the first Dem debate, it was actually pretty awesome.
I go to a tiny Catholic school and most of the kids don’t pay attention to politics. Although there are a few guys who constantly want to debate with me because they love Trump and know how I feel about the topic.

@jacobpilawa Yeah!

@jacobpilawa No I definitely count volunteering! I will refrain from saying who I was the youth director for because I do not support their views in the slightest but I was glad to have the opportunity. DO you think its okay that I left off the name on my application? I was afraid there could be bias considering the general makeup of Chicago
