UChicago EA Applicants 2018

Hahahahah boring classics are proven to be soporific. Jenna Marbles, anybody? “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” zzzzzz

Hmm I have heard of the Lizzie Bennet diaries. Could you link me to the Youtube videos/channel, SeaSwallowed?

@carter001: I second Torovr. Go to sleep, and best of luck for tomorrow!

@Torvor: I was about to copy off my optional essay for UChicago and go for Lolita, The Great Gatsby, Araby, Don Quixote, Animal Farm, and Crime and Punishment, but if you like mystery and action more, I’d say The Mark of Zorro. I think someone mentioned Albert Camus up there – he’s one of my favourite authors, but I’m not sure if I’d call The Plague and The Fall classics… I mean, how do you even know when a novel crosses that border and becomes a classic?

@International95: IKR?! Interestingly enough though, I adore Austen simply because her work is highly relatable despite being written in the eighteenth century; her characterisations would not be out of place in a modern setting. Not to mention how witty she is ;)

@SeaSwallowed: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries omg! I LOVED it. Have you watched Emma Approved yet? I’m scared they’ll make Emma even more annoying than she already is, lol.

@International95 - Here you go! [The Lizzie Bennet Diaries - YouTube](The Lizzie Bennet Diaries - YouTube)

@marshmellowish YES I’m watching Emma Approved and I’m shipping Alex/Emma so hard.

Time to attempt sleep. Best wishes to everyone! No matter what happens, you’re all amazing people, and I’m sure you’ll all end up somewhere great where you’ll have an awesome time regardless of what tomorrow brings.

@Marshmallow Thanks for the list! I’ll look into them as soon as I finish P&P (Two chapters finished already  ) I noticed you had Lolita in there. I’ve heard a lot of things about it that peaked my interest, especially since it is “banned” in so many places. What are your personal reasons for suggesting it?

No, I haven’t. I used to avoid the “classics” like the plague for some reason. Now I wish I had more time to read them all, especially because I want to write a few novels of my own.

@SeaSwallowed: I’m on the third episode now, and dear God is this Emma so annoyingly likable. And this Mr. Knightley fasermlbyhtrdfkgurjm the FEELS

@Torvor: Hahaha thanks for giving me a opportunity to fangirl over lit! P&P (y) The cognitive dissonance that you’ll experience while reading Lolita will more often than not be blown away by Nabokov’s breathtaking prose, plus Lolita is a great allegory about love, lust, and American consumerism from an European perspective. That, and International95’s point about the narrator. And high five, potential novelist! Have you ever done NaMoWriMo?

@Marshmellowish Any time, I’m always willing to help someone fangirl. As for NaNoWriMo, no, I haven’t. Unfortunately my writing genius peaks for about two weeks every few months, and disappears. The longest I’ve stuck with a book is a Post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi, and I did that by literally forcing myself not to think about what happens next, and let the book write itself. I got 20,000 words into it, and I hope to go back and re-edit and continue where I left off. How about you?

I’m assuming you guys are sleeping at this time… Well… About 12 more hours to go sigh

The technology ban that I had placed during my all nighter is now over, and I think for once it’s a little too late to arrive at the party, primarily because everyone is asleep by now. It’s ~2AM by me and I cannot wait for school to start so that hopefully I’ll have something stimulating my brain and distracting me from D-Day Anxiety!

I couldn’t sleep because I’m so nervous

Lol I think it’s my turn not to sleep. I guess I’ll spend the night writing supplement essays? Waiting for the decision, that is? Then if it’s bad news, then I can be like, “well, at least I’ve done my work. Yippie!”

I’ve applied to 9/12 schools. I have no motivation to finish the last three

Really? haha. I would have too but I do not want to waste $$ on sending SAT scores and stuff yet.

Hey guys are any of you international applicants US citizens by any chance?

@international same here LOL and also the application fees…
@jason I have a US citizenship (international student)

@Torvor: Tell us more about your post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel! And nah, I haven’t had the time to dedicate myself to NaNoWriMo, but I’ve tried writing several novel(la)s that all end up in my recycle bin. The longest I’ve written was about 35000 words headdesks

@bulet13: Damnnn you’re early. I’ve finished the first drafts of my supplements, but I’ve still got a ways to go!

@SeaSwallowed: Did an Emma Approved marathon. The feels, gawd, the feels

does it help significantly if you have US citizenship and are also an international student? In fact, in my school, there seems to be a general trend in which most US citizens with stellar stats yet apply from abroad get into highly ranked schools .

The judgement day is at hand.
