UChicago First-Year taking your questions!

Hi, so one of my main flaws is my sat scores, I know that UChicago has a holistic admission process but I have 1450 on my sat( my first time taking it ever) and I applied EA so it is too late for me to retake the test. Other than that I can keep up with the amount of work. Do you think that my sat scores is going to stop me from entering this wonderful school?

1450/1600 is great! don’t worry about it.

^ haha I wish but no 1100/ 1600. Not so great, I would retake it but as I said it is too late.

Who were your chem professors? And how are the chem classes at UChicago? might want to major in chem!

question about social life: would going to bed around 10 at night exclude me from anything at uchicago? or do people go out during the day/evening too?

Oh well if you are deferred then you should be able to retake.

Chem is not going to be much harder than anywhere else. Chen professors at the general level are all about the same.

Social life is what you make of out. But I’d be surprised if you make it to bed that early due to coursework

Was there any specific chemistry professor that you liked the most? Sorry for all the questions!

Oh I didn’t have a favorite. I mean you don’t really get to pick since there is only 2 lectures. So you pick one of them and since they’re lectures its usually not a big deal which person you have.

@ironchariot it depends what you mean by social life:

if you mean house events and plays and that sort of thing, most official events will be done by 10.

if you mean parties, like at most schools, parties don’t tend to start until after 10 (usually)

also @ironchariot - typically you can’t fulfill the art requirement with classes that require you to draw, paint, etc. so something like history and theory of drama (which I took last year) might be something to look into! it’s a pretty great class, and it fulfills the art requirement. it was also pretty easy to get into last year.

@kennedyiceit I’m not going to use names here because of google searches and stuff, but the Quantum Mech and Chemical Kinetics teacher is supposed to be both very good and very hard. She usually teaches Honors Gen Chem too but this year will instead be teaching only the second quarter of regular Gen Chem. Other than that, both of the regular organic and honors organic profs are supposed to have a number of teaching issues (like thick accents and class style), but the honors teacher is generally better. I haven’t heard much else because those are the two main classes that people take in the first two years, but people here generally like their chem professors. =]

@Brown I’m down for anything with “history” in it! Thanks so much!
and I’m not much of a partier in the conventional sense, just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t be totally isolating myself

thanks @ramboacid and @pagrok! Your answers really help!

is Chicago one of the most stressful colleges in the country? because of really high standard student body as well as the quarter system?

Yes. It’s usually on lists of most stressful/rigorous colleges. Incredible student body, core requirements, emphasis on classical texts and source readings, culture of the school, lesser grade inflation.

does the core make it harder to double major? also, I don’t really understand the housing system. I thought students could say where they would prefer to live, but then I read here something about “lottery housing”, so how exactly does the housing system work? (sorry I think this might be a dumb question, but I am an international applicant and students don’t live at the university here). thanks a lot for answering questions!

@brbrbr not necessarily if you come in having placed out of certain core requirements with AP credit or placement test (e.g. foreign language, gen chem, math). However, it’s difficult to double major in completely unrelated subjects. Double majors tend to be in related subjects where there is overlap in requirements (Econ/Public Policy, for instance). Also, you are placed in the housing queue based on when you submit your deposit.

Yes brbrbr. TheBanker is right. You give your top 3 housing choices, but you are more likely to get your top 1 or 2 or maybe 3 if you make your deposit early. So if you get in EA, and you know UChicago is it for you, get your deposit in right away.

My son did the opposite. He did not get his deposit in till right before the deadline, so he did not get any of his top 3 choices, though he is very happy where he is now and his housemates.

The core will make it difficult to double major not only cause it takes up classes but because core classes may conflict with major courses timing wise. I came in with AP credits, just not language or calculus. So I had to take a full year of calculus and a full year of French. Along with a full year of humanities and Art, full year of social science, full year of chem, and some bio courses and civilization courses I cannot double major except for environmental science because I am a biology major. I am also likely unable to study abroad. So the core is a huge factor, and I personally am not a fan anymore after having gone through it, especially cause it really hindered my ability to explore in a liberal arts kind of way while still making sure i got my biology major requirements done and might stop me from study abroad, but to each his own.

@Kaukauna , @The Banker and @PAHRok thank you very much for your answers.

It makes sense that the core takes up classes and might conflict with major courses timing wise, but doesn’t the quarter system help a little with that by making it easier to take more classes?
