Is this something new this year? My son was on the UChicago waitlist and got the email yesterday saying he is being offered guaranteed transfer admission to UChicago for school year 2025/26 as long as he completes 1 year at an accredited 4 year institution with a 3.5 gpa and is in good academic standing. (And no grades below a B-).
This seems like an amazing offer- better than the z list. There is no deposit either.
Has anyone else received this offer?
Two of my son’s friends got this offer for BU. Seems like a new thing? I don’t understand the strategy…
Maybe to make up spots for people who end up leaving after the first year? Why wait until third year to get fresh students in to fill spots.
When considering transfer to a college with heavy core / GE requirements (e.g. University of Chicago), the student may want to check how much of those requirements can be fulfilled with courses transferred from another college. If not much of them can, then the transfer student may be behind on fulfilling those requirements, which can delay graduation.
Ah-okay, this is not a new thing, apparently…
There is a good write-up on college vine that I am not allowed to link here.
Yeah, one concern he has is that at the college he will be going to this fall, all his AP credits are accepted but some aren’t at UChicago.
I am hoping he ends up just staying where he goes TBH. But we’ll see.
This is the best case - because if you go somewhere focused on a 3.5, maybe you don’t join any clubs or integrate yourself - and you’re either not integrating or if you are, you’re counting down til you leave and leave all your friends.
Other schools offer these - Cornell, BU and more. UVA has with Wise, etc.
Best of luck in year one t your student - hopefully it’s fulfilling and they don’t want to go.
But if it’s not, that’s a great option for them.
Best of luck.
