Hi. I have the UChicago app and the Brown app done and have no clue which one I should submit(I can only do one, not both). Wanted to see if I stood a better chance at UChicago or Brown…so i guess this is kinda a chance thread

Your stats are pretty spectacular, you would most likely get accepted at both schools. If essays are your strong point, I would suggest UChicago. If they’re not, Brown.

Secret Asian Man-I like them both equally. I’ve done a gazillion pro con lists and they always come up equal…so i figured this might help break the tie!

Well, technically, UChicago has a higher acceptance rate, and it’s completely amazing otherwise. So UChicago it is.

There, all done.

…If you really like both schools that much, I guess it would be your essays. If you feel that they’re really creative and speak to your personality well, then go for UChicago. Or you may wish to dig around the forums for the social lives of the two schools, since this information takes a bit longer to find.

First of all, I don’t understand why it has to be one or the other for applying.

Isn’t it really core vs. open curriculum and Chicago vs. Providence?

I don’t understand why you find it so difficult to select.

My first choice would be University Chicago. I think Chicago would provide me a stronger foundation for graduate studies.

I can argue both ways …

As secret asian man said you have the stats to get into either. Why not go for both? Visit both schools after you get accepted and then decide. Are you a foreign student? I get the sense that foreign students lean towards Brown because it is an Ivy school and perhaps that carries more weight back home. You can also claim that you go to same school as Hermoine …

Brown has engineering program and Chicago doesn’t.

US News and World Report ranks Chicago higher than Brown but I don’t care for its rankings.

You have a decent chance either place. Everyone probably has a somewhat better chance at Chicago: Chicago and Brown are likely to be accepting about the same number of people RD, but Brown will be doing it from a pool that is ~19,000+, and Chicago seems likely to have an RD pool of ~13,000+. So if your only concern is to maximize your likelihood of being accepted, Chicago is the better choice.

However, you probably want to be thinking about financial aid as well, and there I believe Brown has a clear advantage for people at your income level (although you shouldn’t take my word for it, and do your own research). You may be 50% more likely to be accepted at Chicago, but you may be 50% more likely to be able to afford Brown if you are accepted there. In that case, and assuming you are comfortable with your safety, if you really have only one more application you can submit Brown might be the better one.

Thanks everyone
I only have the money to apply to one, and i’ve been leaning towards UChicago, my only reservation is the core which is not my favorite. But other than that, I really like it

I have to agree with J’adoube. I don’t know your personal financial situation, but do anything you can to find the money to apply to both. Brown and UChicago are completely different schools, so I would definitely suggest applying to both if that is at all possible.
To make an informed suggestion about one over the other, I need much more information. Intended major, essays, do you prefer core or open curriculum?, how creative are you?, what other schools are you applying to?, etc. Based on what you said, you have a good chance at both. If you wrote solid, creative essays for chicago I’d say your in. I don’t Brown is a school you can say someone will definitely get into, but you have a good shot if you wrote good essays.
I would say apply to Brown, and do whatever you can to find the money to apply to Chicago by saturday.

I want to echo the advice you’re getting to choose which school to apply to based on your preferences rather than your perceived likelihood of acceptance. Even financial aid isn’t a good metric; while Brown’s generosity is probably slightly better than Chicago’s on average, neither is a financial aid powerhouse like H/Y/P and Chicago has been known to provide pleasant surprises (both with regular FA and merit money) about as often as it’s fallen short.

We more or less live on Brown’s campus and have many ties to faculty/students/administrators at Brown; my son is a second year student at Chicago. The differences between the schools with regard to undergraduate life are usually highly exaggerated when people compare and contrast the two. The overlap in the student bodies is tremendous, as both tend to attract kids who are turned on by the journey of learning more than (or at least as much as) their intended professional destinations. I think the stereotypes that Brown has a somewhat more relaxed, “traditional” vibe and Chicago a more intense, “quirky” vibe do hold true, but the majority of students from each school would feel at home at the other.

If finances are the main reason for applying to only one of these schools despite equal interest at this point, might you contact their admissions offices to ask about possible application fee waivers? I would think the combination of being highly qualified academically with being Native American would make you an attractive candidate for both schools. If you’re really torn between the two schools, you would be best served by waiting to see what the admissions and financial aid gods have in store for you and then visiting to find out which is more “you”.

That’s a very good suggestion and one way to find the money. Remember that life is about choices, and in a few months it’ll be a lot better to have two (or more) packages to choose from than one. Good luck.

I’m applying to both RD, and while I don’t really have anything against UChicago other than the non-college friendly neighborhood, I prefer Brown to UC. I feel like Brown is more resourceful and in a more college-friendly area than Hyde Park.

look, you have great stats,
and you’re NATIVE AMERICAN.
you are going to be accepted to either place.
i love how everyone is tactfully ignoring the elephant in the room.
i’m not trying to be racist; i’m just saying, b/c of your ethnicity,
you have spectacular chances anywhere. i’d even apply to harvard, if i were you.
