headed2great, we release regular decisions toward the end of March. It’s useful for us to receive any updates or notes of continued interest by early March.

dannyo95, your minister is welcome to mail or fax this recommendation in to our office.

I was just wondering how UChicago looks at upward trends. On a whole, my gpa isn’t as stellar due to a subpar sophomore year, but i’m currently having a strong junior year and hope to have a strong senior year. How would this affect submissions?

@randomusername, we’d always rather see a strong upward trend than a downward trend! We’ll still consider your sophomore grades, but they’ll be seen in the context and understanding of your increased performance in later years.

Hi Grace,
I was wondering about UChicago’s AP policy. I understand that UChicago accepts a maximum of six credits, and I have already taken 5 AP tests and plan to take 6 more. I was trying to determine which of the six tests I should take before I attend UChicago because if some of my tests do not count for credit I don’t think there is any benefit to taking them. Which AP exams satisfy UChicago’s general education requirement? I plan to study political science as an undergrad, and I have taken AP Human Geo, World History, English Language, Spanish Language, and US History. I plan to take AP Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, English Literature, Biology, Calculus BC, and US Government and Politics. Which of these do you think I should take as a freshman entering UChicago in the fall?

Hello!
I am an international applicant from India and I was wondering if UChicago offers interviews in India. Being an international student, I did not have the opportunity to visit the campus and interact with the students and I am really looking forward to an alumni interview to get to know more about the college. In case there aren’t any alumni in India, is it possible for me to have an interview over Skype or telephone?

Also, I had a few doubts regarding my essay. I know I cant change it now but the doubts have been troubling me so here you go. I chose the Oranges and Apples prompt and felt that a dialogue-type essay would do more justice to what I had in mind. I personally love the content but it is pretty informal and well, dialogue-ish! Did I make a wrong decision? :/

Hey Grace,
I was accepted EA to UChicago, and I’m currently enrolled in 5 classes at school, one of which is a Business Ethics course. However, I’m considering dropping the class because I’m not gaining nearly as much from it in terms of knowledge as I expected to. If I do ultimately decide to drop the class, would I need to notify my regional admissions counselor about the change? It’s an elective course and I’ve already exceeded the elective credits requirement for graduation at my high school.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer all of our questions - it’s much appreciated! :)

17horses, you can have a look at our AP credit policy here-- I think it will answer many of your questions. [Examination Credit and Transfer Credit - University of Chicago Catalog](<a href=“Examination Credit < University of Chicago Catalog”>Examination Credit < University of Chicago Catalog)
There is also a section on this site for IB credits and A levels in case anyone else is wondering about those.

ramsdale, it is appropriate to send your letter of continued interest anytime before early March.

conscience13, we do have alumni interviewers in India both in-person and over Skype. If you’ve requested the interview option and an alum is available, they will contact you directly. And, it’s fine to write in whatever fashion you wish for your extended essay-- it doesn’t have to be a traditional 5 paragraph essay.

ultrachromatic, this is definitely fine-- just email your regional admissions counselor to let them know, but I don’t foresee any issues with this switch.

Hi Grace,
I know you said for deferred applicants to send in everything before the 31st, but my grades might not be finalized by then. There are some issues with the computers. Is it ok if my midyear report is a bit late? I’m a little freaked out. Thanks.

Thanks for admission and everything. Idk how I got admitted, personally I thought my application was pretty crap o.o

Anyhow. I made the mistake of EDing a school I didn’t think I’d get into and, in retrospect, one that I don’t want to go to over Chicago. Any tips for my situation?

hi again Grace. Sorry to be a bother but I sent my letter of interest to my counselor a little over a week ago. I understand that you guys are very busy and I appreciate your work, but how long is too long to wait for a response before resending? I just want to make sure my letter gets through. Thanks

ironchariot, no problem. Please send in your midyear report when it is available. You’re welcome to email your regional admissions counselor letting them know it may be delayed due to a technical error if you are worried. Also, we try to respond personally to every continued interest letter but are sometimes not able to. Rest assured that it has been received and placed in to your file for our review regardless

orcinus, your ED acceptance at a different school is a binding commitment unless it will be financially not feasible for you to attend. I suggest you discuss this with your guidance counselor and parents, but the appropriate action would be to decline your offer of admission to UChicago and to attend your ED school.

Hi Grace, my son was accepted EA. Have all/most of the merit scholarships for EA applicants been awarded? Also, he is a National Merit Semi-finalist, does that mean an automatic $2000 and when is the latest for him to indicate UChicago as his first choice to get that scholarship? He’s applying to other schools and really won’t make a decision until after RDs come out and he has a chance to do some doing some overnight (including an overnight at UChicago). Thank you!

hi Grace. I was recently named a finalist for a scholarship for students from certain areas of the country who have overcome a significant challenge. Although the scholarship is somewhat local, I feel being named finalist is an achievement, and the award if I’m lucky enough to get it is quite large. Would this be something worth updating my counselor over, or is it too obscure/local? I can explain the scholarship more and include a copy of my essay in my email to my counselor if needed. thanks.

Ivyleaguefan, we do not have a set date yet for RD decision release but it will be in late March and certainly before April 1.

momwquestions, we continue to award merit scholarship funds through April so it is certainly still possible that your son could receive an award. I would check with the aid office regarding the specific details, but if he is a national merit finalist I believe to receive our award he simply needs to indicate UChicago as his first choice by our official reply date (May 1).

ironchariot, you are welcome to update your regional counselor of this achievement. I don’t think it would be necessary to include a copy of your essay but we would welcome a brief description of the award program.

Hey Grace, how important are SAT scores in the admissions process? On Collegeboard it says that most kids enter by having a minimum of 2120. So I was wondering, how important are SAT scores for UChicago and what score should I target to be an ideal applicant.
