UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Collegeboy, we can understand if students experience a small period of transition after moving in to more difficult coursework, but hope to see students maintaining a strong level of performance in highly rigorous coursework throughout their high school careers.

banditx, we do take SAT or ACT scores in to consideration in our admissions process; they are a part, but not the only part, of our admissions process, so know that we do place strong emphasis on writing, teacher recommendations, activities, and transcripts as well. Falling in our middle 50% range (1420-1530 SAT without writing, 31-34 ACT) can be a good metric that shows that you may be competitive for admission, but is certainly not the only factor!

cgkrazz, sending an email with your continued interest and submitting your midyear report are the only things we suggest for deferred students to let us know they still consider UChicago a top choice.

Hello Grace!

We have sent both ACT and SAT scores to UChicago. However, ACT scores are signficantly better than SAT scores.

How will UChicago consider scores in this situation.

Thank you.

Hello Grace,
DD was accepted EA! The folks in the admissions/aid office have been so very helpful and kind. Thank you, UCHICAGO, for taking such care with regards to answering emails and phone calls. My daughter certainly appreciates the scarf too! Very nice touch!!

Hello Grace, I am an admitted early action student and the 2012 federal income taxes and college profile that my family sent in were just very recently recorded as “received” on my portal. I was wondering if you could give me an estimate as to how long it usually takes to receive my financial aid package for someone in my situation? I’m in love with UChicago and I want to commit, but I just can’t until I have all of the information about what my cost of attendance would be. Thank you!!

Hiya Grace,

A coupla people I know are tryin’ t’dissuade me from goin’ t’UChicago ‘cause they say that UChicago is a ‘German’ school where everybody’s antisocial and totally focused on work. Y’know: work, work, work, work, and no play at all. I’ve applied to UChicago an’ I’m not sure if I should go there after all, if I get admitted. I’ve got ADHD and am totally gregarious, so I’m thinkin’ that I might not fit in too well with UChicago. Am I kinda wrong here? ‘Cause I’m not sure, some relatives tellin’ me one thing, other’s tellin’ me another…urrgghhh…my head hurts…

Thanks!!!

Hi Grace,
I know it is extremely late but I just realised that there was a typo in my essay. It never caught my eye while I was reviewing before and even after submitting the essay. Basically, I typed one letter instead of another and that changed the meaning of the word but it is understandable if the context is considered.

What should I do now? Should I let it be or probably upload the revised version on my UChicago account?

silvertab, congratulations to your daughter and thank you for your kind words! Glad she likes her scarf-- it has been an especially “scarfy” winter for most areas of the country this year, so we bet it’s getting some good use!

wondering2014, we will also need your 2013 tax returns and FAFSA to be able to give you a final financial aid package, in addition to the Profile and 2012 returns (which we would have used in EA to be able to give you an estimated package before the FAFSA/2013 returns became available). These packages usually begin rolling out to students in March.

Zzwicker, I’m not quite sure what you hope to hear from this question; I think it could be great for you to refine the thoughts presented in your question and perhaps post it to the general page for some opinions from others!

Conscience13, let it be  This is not a major issue (unless, say, the typo caused the word to become a very rude word) and not something to be overly worried about.

@UChicago: I guess I rambled on too much. Sorry.

No problem! I guess I was just a little confused by your question-- I’m happy to discuss anything you are interested in but just didn’t know what direction to take.

^Sorry again. I guess my question is (very simply) this: Is UChicago really the work-you-to-death place some people make it out to be? (You know, some guys say that UChicago is where “fun goes to die”?) Thanks.

Will the IME Program at UChicago be ABET accredited?

@Zzwicker, no need to worry! Students work hard here, and it is a school where you will need to put in a strong amount of effort to be successful, but students have plenty of time for outside activities beyond class. I’d encourage you to ask some questions of our students to see how they spend their time by emailing our student question-answering email address, psac@uchicago.edu.

@Kennedyiceit, the IME program plans to seek all appropriate accreditation applicable to a graduate and undergraduate engineering program, but as it is still in development has not yet received accreditation. You’re welcome to keep updated of their progress by visiting their website at http://ime.uchicago.edu/about/</a>, and Prof. Tirrell, the director of the program, is very open to questions-- his email is listed on the site.

How does the application process work in terms of submitting additional materials? If you all have rejected a student who submits additional material do you look over the file again?

Thanks Grace @uchicago!

Collegeboy, we make sure to review all students’ required material when making an admissions decision, and continue to review supplemental material as it is received. We hope to consider everything a student has sent before making a final admissions decision, but in some cases supplemental material is sent too close to our decision date for it to be of great impact. We are not able to review additional material or appeal admissions decisions for students who have received a final admissions decision of deny.

@UChicago: Thanks Grace!

I’m curious if it’s worth applying to be admitted to the graduate CS program at this point in the year. I know they do admissions as they receive them, but would it be better to wait until next year at this point, or is it still worth applying to?

@CtrlAltDel, I would encourage you to contact the program directly about this, I am involved in only our undergraduate admissions process.

Hi Grace, I’ve noticed that UChicago has sent out some likely letters or early acceptance letters this year and I was wondering if it is possible at all that international students would get such letters or they are only for domestic students.

When are the financial aid packets due to be mailed out?
