UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

My Daughter just got accepted by University of Chicago last week! We are so happy for her. Thanks to all of your help! We have learned a lot form this forum!
A quick question, doe she need to send in her mid year report or just wait to send the final report when she graduate in May?
Thanks again!

@UChicago‌ I got deferred from the EA, can i submit a third additional recommendation letter from a coach or conductor?

@mine030, if you would like to do this, you are welcome to upload this piece to your UChicago Account.

@Mathlete0122, it is not necessary to submit additional recommendation letters, but you are welcome to upload the supplemental essay in your UChicago Account if you wish to.

@aliefmoulana, traditionally we have admitted about 10% of our deferred students; we don’t have a strict quota or set requirement for the percent of deferred students we must or will admit, but around 10% of our deferred students are usually accepted.

@temporeiches, yes, we do deny students early action; the three possible decisions in early action are admit/defer/deny.

@wethemusicmakers, you may upload this in a Word document in the “supplemental material” section of your UChicago account.

@ivyclimber, we do receive midyear reports submitted by counselors through the Common Application.

@tatiachelidze, thanks for your interest even as a 10th grader! We do not have any online programs and require students to take their exams in-person on campus, so if you were admitted and decided to attend, you would need to come to Chicago.

@rumbleman97 we tend to discourage students from submitting additional recommendation letters unless they have already been written-- additional rec letters are not a strong factor in deciding which students to admit after being deferred, and we do not want your teachers or advisers to be burdened by writing them. However, if you feel strongly about including this, your teacher may email or mail it to our office.

Also everyone-- I am taking vacation over our Winter break, so apologies if my response to your question is delayed. Our general inbox, collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu, is open and responded to daily by an admissions officer. Please consider using that resource for urgent questions between now and the beginning of January! Happy holidays to all.

Have a nice holiday!

@UChicago I am an internation student from Mongolia and I have a question. Would my chance for admission decrease if I apply for financial aid?

international*

@Uchicago Does the essay (Main supplement) have to reflect one’s personality or simply answer the prompt in an interesting way? Would a combination of the two be better?

@UChicago‌ How long can the Why UChicago essay be? Is it okay if it’s in the 400’s range?

@ljibinW yeah it does. UChicago is a need-based school which means they look at your financial needs when they consider your application. Good luck! :)

@IjibinW‌
Just a slight clarification of what @MelissaGordon‌ said, because all the terms used can be incredibly confusing, particularly to an international applicant. UChicago is indeed need-sensitive for international applicants, because they need to conserve their resources. They guarantee need-based aid to anyone admitted, so need-based means they will meet you’re demonstrated financial aid. Need-based aid is to distinguish from merit-based aid, which is scholarship money given usually for academic or athletic achievement.

Anyways, the slightly unfortunate bottom line is that because you’re an international they will consider the fact that you need aid, and it’s possible that could make you slightly less competitive. However, if you need the aid you should absolutely not consider not applying for fear of your application chances. Unless you apply for aid now, it is impossible to get aid for any of your four years, so make sure you apply.

But do not despair! 12% of UChic is international, and many do get aid, so you’ve got a chance!

@andros12 thank you!

@UChicago I was deferred EA, and I’ve written a completely different Common App essay (which I’m submitting to all the other schools I’m applying to) that I would much rather have evaluated during RD at UChicago. Is there any way I could replace my current essay? Or just send in this new one? Thanks so much!

@UChicago Hi there! I’m from an International School! I would like to check if my school can still use Naviance to handle transcripts and letters of recommendations for UChicago if I’d like to use the Universal College Application?

I had a question, but am e-mailing the general address instead.

@UChicago‌ I have submitted both my application and my supplement, but on the UChicago portal, there isn’t a space under ‘Forms’ for me to indicate interest in an off-campus alum interview. What should I do?

@UChicago Hi! Quick question: I was deferred, and I know it was in part because of my poor essays. Is there any way I could re-write my essays and send them to you?

@Uchicago Do you happen to know how many kids or the percentage of kids deferred this year? Because it seemed quite high.

Hi all! Since several of you have the same question-- it is possible for you to send additional essays if you were deferred, but not required by any means,and not something we strongly suggest. We are not able to replace essays that have been previously submitted but are able to consider new or updated essays alongside your prior submissions if uploaded to your UChicago Account. Our only strong suggestions for deferred students are to send a midyear report when one is available and, if UChicago is still a top choice for you, to consider sending a short note of continued interest to your regional admissions officer sometime before March (email is a fine method to send this!)
