UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Hi @goonersfan17, I’m sorry about the confusion! If you e-mail our office at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu or call at 773-702-8650 with your name and UChicago Account number, we will be able to see what the problem is and help you request an interview!

Hi @gentleindifference, While coaches can support athletes, UChicago holds athletes to the same admissions standards.

Hi @blink24, Please feel free to write as dense of an essay as you would like! We take as much time as necessary to fully understand and comprehend the essays. We do not look at the Questbridge essays. Like you mentioned, we only review the Common App (or other consortium application) essay and supplements.

Hi @UChicago! About the uncommon essay, if I am using a past essay prompt, do I need to copy and paste the prompt into my document so admissions will know which question I’m answering, or should they be able to tell from the content of my essay? Thank you.

@UChicago thank you so much! I figured it out, but thanks for being so willing to help me!

@UChicago

  1. What do you like to hear in the "Why UChicago" essay?
  2. I hate to be the one to judge a city by what I hear in the news, but is the campus safe?

@UChicago when considering Questbridge applicants, does UChicago remain need-blind? In otherwise, do you just consider a QB applicant for admission or also whether they are deserving of a scholarship, which could change likelihood of acceptance in general. Thanks!

Hi @UChicago ! I’m planning on submitting a music supplement. Is there a preferred format for music submissions? For example, would it be better to submit a music resume with links to my online performances, or just upload a raw video of a single performance?

Thank you for the help!

@UChicago I have an additional question. Are there any requirements about the format in which supplements must be submitted? For example, is an attachment of a photo or a writing structure that doesn’t follow convention allowed?

Hi @NikkuWadde, Please note the prompt at the top of your document.

Hi @cliffnotes, It’s important to be very specific when writing the “Why UChicago” essay. For example, don’t just say that you want to attend the University because it offers a biology department and is in an urban area, because those characteristics are applicable to many universities. Really think about the reasons you are applying and want to be a UChicago student. The neighborhood of Chicago that the University of Chicago is located in, Hyde Park, is an extremely nice neighborhood. Over 60 percent of professors live with their families in Hyde Park. But, despite how safe the neighborhood is, we have safety measures and precautions in place. Some of them include a shuttle bus system that runs several routes every 20 minutes throughout the night and early morning (and public transportation bus routes throughout the day), a UChicago police department, emergency blue lights, and security guards.

Hi @blink24, UChicago remains need-blind for Questbridge applicants.

Hi @tauisgood and @blink24, We do not have a preference for the format of music/portifolio submissions. Feel free to submit whatever you would like.

@UChicago What length is too much for the essays? I’ve written two so far, but they both ended up in excess of 1200 words. I’m planning on cutting them down, what should I aim for?

@Tgmeier36 they say stay around 500. They won’t stop reading, but they can’t guarantee interest. 1200 does seem a bit long, although if its really good, it shouldn’t be a problem because someone on CC got in with around 2000 I think. My own are 600, 700, and 800, and I am still trying to cut even that down. That was just my two cents. We’ll see what the rep says.

@UChicago Does the office have an approximate date for ED/EA decisions notification?

Have the problems with the financial aid office been resolved? I know two current students whose financial aid did not get resolved until well into October. They were told the problem was a lack of staff. Unfortunately, the bursar’s office didn’t have this problem and so wanted to be paid.

@exlibris97, that would be extremely nerve racking for the students and parents. Were there some special financial circumstances as to why the processing was so slow? How were the students able to matriculate without their financial aid settled?

@exlibris97 @goingnutsmom Yeah, my child’s financial aid package came in very late too; was told it’s because of the switch to a new system. In the end, all were good. I assume it only affected the juniors and seniors, not the freshmen.

Hi @KoreanConnect98, Decisions will be released Monday, December 19th.

Hi @exlibris97, We strive to provide financial aid packages in a timely manner to admitted students because we know it is an important factor in deciding which college or university to attend. Our College Aid counselors are working hard to make sure students receive their financial aid packages on time.

@UChicago Sorry if this has already been asked or is posted on the website (I couldn’t seem to find it though), but when is the deadline for RD applicants to request an interview?

@UChicago what percentage of deferred applicants typically make it into the school?

@UChicago do you expect there to be a substantial difference in admission rates between ED II and RD applicants? I want to be able to compare financial aid offers in the spring, but UChicago is my first choice and I worry that applying RD will decrease my chances of admission.
Also–the Application Program Selection Tool states for RD that admissions/aid decisions will come out in mid-February; however, on the general page of application timelines, it shows that admissions decisions for RD candidates will be released in late March. Which is correct?

@UChicago I am not sure if anybody has asked the question in this thread. A lot of people said that most of the EA applicants, even the strong ones with good stats and essays, will be deferred, in order to accommodate more EDI students? That is to say, UChicago will admit more EDI students than EA? Is it possible that school will release the STAT data of the admitted percentage of both pools after 12/19?

Hi there,

I recently was deferred EA, and am looking to spice up my application. I have requested an interview through emailling my admissions counselor, and requested to change to ED 2, and am considering creating a Portfolio. What else can I do to make my application more interesting and competitive? Also, if I create a portfolio, what sorts of things can I include, and what do admissions like/not like to see.

Thanks so much!
