UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

@UChicago I saw that the official acceptance rates for first years in 2016 were posted recently on the Maroon, and was wondering if there will be any official release of data on transfer acceptance rates. It would be really nice to know the applicant pool size and number of admits/percent yield as well, if possible. Thanks!

HI @Vesperan. We typically do not release official numbers for each transfer application cycle. However, generally, we receive between 750-1000 applications each year, and our admit rate moves between 3 and 4%, depending on the year.

Hi,

I’m currently in the British education system, and I am currently planning on applying for UChicago for 2017 intake. Regarding the SAT 2 subject tests, the information on the UChicago website says that they are not required, but will it make a large impact on my application if I do not do them? Are they not required but recommended?

(extra info: I decided on applying to US unis quite late, so I haven’t done the SAT yet, so I’m planning to do the SAT in October/November, but not any subject tests. The other US unis I am currently planning to apply to do not require any subject tests.)

Thanks.

Hi,
i am a rising senior. I have plans to take a gap year after my senior year. Should I indicate that in my application when I apply this year? Will be nice to get an acceptance before I start my gap year as I dont want to be thinking about college app during my gap year.

Hi! Does UChicago allow Essay Option 6 (posing your own question or choosing from past prompts) every year?

Hello! Here is my question:
I signed up for a UChicago Info session, but due to a severe thunderstorm I was unable to attend. (Looked like thick fog, since it was raining so hard. I didn’t want to risk my life in the long drive.)
Since I was unable to attend, do you think that would negatively affect my chances at UChicago? I really like the school, I visited it back in freshman year, so I wanted to attend the session.
Thank you.

@EmZoWe, we were at that info session along with hundreds of others. No one would have known whether or not you were there. And, FYI, things like that don’t affect your admissions chances anywhere. Relax.

@UChicago, which is more helpful: to visit on Columbus day open house or make overnight stay in October to finalize the application?

@UChicago Hello! I just joined this thread so please forgive me if this is redundant. When does registration for EA alumni interviews open? We did an on campus tour last Fall so if possible we would like to do the interview locally.

Hi all, So sorry about the delay!

@Haamoo7, SAT Subject Tests are completely optional! If you do not submit them, they will not at all negatively impact your application.

@curiousparent888, You can definitely indicate that on your application! If you are admitted, please notify the admissions office again about your gap year.

@mvxesque, We always allow students to choose from a past prompt or create their own prompt.

@EmZoWe, That will not at all impact you admissions decision! In fact, we do not track demonstrated interest.

Hi @Aramian1, It is really all up to you! The benefit of the Columbus Day Open House offers a variety of sessions, student panel, and mock classes. The benefit of an overnight visit is that you get to experience what life as a UChicago student is like first-hand.

Hi @What???!!, Students now have the ability of requesting alumni interviews through their UChicago Accounts. Interviews for EA and ED will begin in mid to late September and run throughout the next few months.

Hello @UChicago ! I have a question. My grades suffered when I was freshman because of some personal problems. I got some As and Bs. The lowest grade I got was b- in French 2. However, my grades improved dramatically when I was a sophomore (all As except for 2 classes). Currently, I am a rising junior. Will this affect my chance of getting in? Should I apply for EA or RD?

Hi @doglover1129, Positive trends are taken into account (and looked at positively) when we review applications. You should also feel free to provide an explanation for a grade you were not happy with if there were outside circumstances impacting your ability in the class. The decision to apply through an early or regular application plan is all up to you. We have a tool on our website you might find useful: http://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/firstyear/application-selection-tool.

Is this the first year Early decision options were offered? Thank you.

@myyalieboy Yes.

Hello @UChicago! Sorry if this is a silly question, but if I’m applying through the Common App, will I still need to fill out the name/citizenship/address/etc. info on the application on my UChicago account? And will I only be able to see the option for requesting an alumni interview once I’ve submitted an application through the UChicago website?

Thanks so much!

Hi @myyalieboy, This is the first year we are offering Early Decision I and Early Decision II.

Hi @goonersfan17, While you do not need to create a UChicago Account if you submit your application through the Common App, the only way to request an alumni interview is through your UChicago Account. You can request an interview before you submit your application.

@UChicago Thank you so much for your quick response!

I saw on the website that I can request an alumni interview by going to the Forms section near the bottom of my UChicago account, but I don’t see the Forms section. Am I just not looking in the right place? Sorry for the slew of questions, and thanks again!

Hi @UChicago:
How does the admissions office view athletic recruits? Can you estimate the percent boost in admission chances (EA and RD) for applicants who are already academically strong? (And is it obvious that I want to do econ?)

@UChicago thanks for this thread! On average, how much time do admissions counselors spend per application, especially reading one essay. Will they take the time to closely read a multifaceted, somewhat dense essay or should it be really straightforward because each essay doesn’t get much time? The length is a little under 700, which is relatively close to the 500 suggestion, so I am more worried about the wording and topic of my essay. Also if an applicant is a questbridge finalist, does UChicago look at the Questbridge essays too or just the Common App and supplements? Thank you
