UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

@Uchicago is it financial need blind for getting off the waitlist?

@Uchicago if Uchicago only accept the students who can afford full pay off waitlist it sounds against your “no barriers” principles. However, if so please let us know so the poor people can move on.

How close do I need to be to my IB predicted scores in order to avoid my offer getting rescinded?

Hi @bigyan. The waitlist is not ranked, and when we say rolling basis, we mean that we will offer students admission from the waitlist over a period of time, not just at one moment. As space becomes available we begin offering admission from the waitlist. We will offer admission from the waitlist for a variety of reasons, but there is nothing students need to do to increase their chances aside from reaching out to their regional admissions counselor to indicate that UChicago is their first choice school.

Hi @AsianStudent101. We do read by region (meaning one officer is in charge of reading for that territory), but there is a multi-tiered reading process that sees several other pairs of eyes on each application.

Hi @cdlyw. Yes, our waitlist is need-blind for all domestic applicants.

Hi @forgetthepirate. We expect our admitted students to perform at a high academic level throughout their senior year. Essentially, this means a level that is consistent with their past performance in high school. We do not have a rubric for rescinding offers of admission. It is difficult to have your offer rescinded, and unless you are performing at a level that is completely inconsistent with your past academic performance, you will have nothing to worry about.

@UChicago thank you for your helpful information regarding the waitlist! As a waitlisted applicant, I’d like to ask if there will be more movement from the WL this month. Could you shed light on its current state?

@UChicago

Which should I contact to express my desire to stay on the waitlist if I am an international students studying in Missouri - an international regional rep or a rep in charge of Missouri?

Hi @serendipity211. There will be movement on the waitlist at least through the end of May. If space opens for you in the class, your regional admissions counselor will contact you. All you need to do, if you haven’t already, is reach out to your regional admissions counselor indicating that UChicago is your top choice.

Hi @DaRaverLA. International students who study in the US are read by the regional admissions counselor for the region of the country they study. You can use our counselor map (https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/contact/map) to locate your counselor. Mary Hetlage reads for the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, while Zach Evans reads for the rest of Missouri.

@UChicago

Around what percent is the admission rate for Early Action candidates? Also, do you have any other information on the process for how students are considered for Merit Scholarships (the full ride) outside of what is stated on the website?

@College123college This year estimates for Early Action admission rates were 10%. Also, don’t bother hoping for a full ride Merit Scholarship — we’re talking about UChicago here. Top candidates are sometimes given $10,000 or $15,000 per year scholarships, with more being exceptionally rare. I would just focus on trying to get in. Outside scholarships are going to be more useful. Besides, all students are considered for scholarships automatically if they are admitted. There is not any extra work you need to do. I would not concern yourself with it.

There is someone on a thread that posted University Scholar at $35,000. Also, there was someone in my S’s high school class who got the Stamps scholarship to UChicago for a full ride. So full rides do happen albeit you have to be a top student with a lot to offer.

@UChicago

Thank you for your response! So am I to understand that any final decisions will be made on my grades/final GPA, and not the final IB exams? I only ask because in one of my courses, the students were not taught nearly 35% of the curriculum (which we only discovered even existed about 2 days before the exam) and thus I’m not confident I can meet the predicted marks.

Hi @forgetthepirate. Yes, rescinding an offer of admission will only happen if a student begins to perform significantly worse academically than was typical the rest of their high school experience. The markers of this performance for us are grades in the classroom primarily. Also, IB scores are not required for admission. We do not need to see them. If you score a 6 or a 7 on the exams you should send them to us, only because you can get course credit at UChicago for those scores. Again, if you don’t do very well on the IB exams we DO NOT need to see them. If you have more specific question regarding your personal academic performance please reach out directly to your regional admissions counselor!

@UChicago, when will financial aid packages be released for accepted transfer students? Also, should I be expecting a physical acceptance packet to be mailed to me, or does that only happen for first year students? Thanks!

@UChicago

I was in NHS my senior year. However, I did not put my NHS memvership on any part of my application.

I got kicked out of NHS for non participation, and I believe my school will send a letter i forming you of this. I also have a 15k/year University Scholarship making the school affordable. Will this affect my acceptance or my scholarship?

Thanks!!!

@UChicago, I got one of my questions answered, (transfers do receive a physical admit packet), though I wanted to ask as a followup: should I expect any additional mail (t-shirts, scarves, etc.) or are those things not usually sent to transfers?

Hi @georgiebae. Don’t worry, merit scholarships will not be removed for a student being unable to complete their time in NHS. We do, however, encourage students who experience a change in curriculum or activities to inform the school they are planning to attend of that change. You mentioned that we will be receiving a letter from your school, but it also would be good form, if you have not already, to reach out to your regional admissions counselor and inform him or her of the situation.

Hi @Vesperan. Traditionally items of that nature are not sent out to transfer students, simply because the timeline for transfer admissions and admitted transfer students works differently. That being said, as an admitted student, reach out to your regional admissions counselor expressing your interest in some of those items, and he or she should be able to work something out.

@UChicago Any idea when housing assignments will be announced?

@VeryLuckyParent We received an email that stated assignments will be up August 5th.

@jarrett211 Thank you!
