UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

Can you say a bit more about the optional video? I know the website says it doesn’t need to look “professional”, but do you expect it to be creative or more straightforward? In other words, should it be more like an interview or a “why UChicago” essay, or more like the supplemental “uncommon essay”?

Hi everyone, So sorry about the delay! Feel free to e-mail us at collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu for the quickest response.

@aguo123 We do not have any word limits, so what you have works for us!
@steadymaintain The Coalition Application open July 1st each year while the Common App opens August 1st.
@yucca10 Great question! It can be whatever you like! My suggestion is to keep it more straightforward, since it is replacing the interview. You don’t need any video editing or production skills. We are fine with and expect students to film themselves using a webcam or smartphone. The subject matter is up to you as well. You can speak about an academic pursuit, extracurricular passion, or anything you weren’t able to expand on in the rest of the application.

Thanks all!
Alex

Hi
I just uploaded my portfolio through my uChicago account, but I couldn’t find a way to submit it. Does it automatically summit all the materials after certain days? Could the admission office see my uploaded material?

@UChicago Hi, I want to know when the optional video is due

@UChicago Does submitting a video help your application, or, vice-versa, does not submitting one hurt?

Hi, my daughter applied to UChicago EA with the video profile. She made a longer than 2 min video and insisted that the instructions that came up in the UChicago account mentioned it would take an upto 5 min video. I couldn’t independently verify it. Can you please confirm? I hope that won’t work against her prospects. UChicago is her top choice.

Hi Grace,

I applied EA and from what I’ve seen on here, it is likely I will be deferred to regular decision. Overall, how many deferred applicants are eventually accepted (either as a percentage or a number)? I’m sure this is a difficult question to answer, but even a ballpark would be very helpful!

Hi @UChicago! I was just accepted EA today and am incredibly excited to potentially attend! However, I was wondering when merit aid details would be posted. UChicago is my top school, but I chose not to ED in order to compare aid packages and the aid letter I received from Chicago is less than ideal. Thank you!

@eaglez316 Congrats on your acceptance. I would call FA at UChicago directly if you want an actionable response.

I got deferred and was wondering if there was a way to resubmit supplements? This would so I can edit them

@eaglez316
Did you ever call and ask about merit?

Hi @UChicago! I was wondering when the optional supplemental video is due. Even though the application was due on 1/2, could I hand it in this week? Thanks!

I completed the common application before the deadline on 1/2, but neglected to submit my writing supplement until the morning of 1/3. Do I need to contact admissions about this or is it acceptable that my writing supplement was later? Thank you @UChicago!

I have been waitlisted for the class of 2023 and I elected to remain on the waitlist and also be evaluated for the next year if I were to take a gap. I imagine there’s no concrete statistics but what are the average odds for a student to make it off the waitlist and for a student to get admitted in the next year if they ticked the option to be considered after a gap year?

What is the state of the hostel?

Hi @UChicago! I am applying to transfer for fall of 2020 (so will be applying in a year), who will be the director of transfer admissions? I want to know so I can direct my questions to them.

If you are not a legacy, don’t offer diversity, not a financial aid kid, not a big money donor- do you have any shot of getting in early action despite having a stellar application and are a full paying student from a private school- essentially a white upper class non-connected boy? Did you accept any kids like this in the early round or do you just defer and expect an ed2 commitment?

.

Son was essentially you; got in ED2…highly recommend if you truly want and love the school

There was an academically talented hooked applicant from my son’s school (4.0 GPA, 35 ACT, lots of AP’s and leadership etc.) who didn’t get in EA and ended up waitlisted. You don’t need to be a white upper class non-connected boy to get dinged from UChicago. It has become an Equal Opportunity reach school.
