Due to a family crisis I was having at home I was only able to send my app a day after nov 1st. I dont know how it will look, should I email the school explaining why my app was submitted late? Or will they be fine with it? BTW i dont live on the east coast so thats why I am asking

Hey Grace, I just saw tonight that my application was “checked in” on Nov 3. I assume that is ll good!

Hi Grace,

My daughter sent in her application on Oct 30. But she still has not received UChicago account yet. She checked everywhere including the spam folder, did not find anything. What should we do? Wait for a couple of more days?

Many thanks.

Sekwht

There is no need to email if your application was submitted late. We are continuing to accept applications for students who, for some reason, needed a little extra time to submit their applications. There is no penalty for a time stamp after Nov. 1 but we do hope that students who have the ability to do so will submit their applications as soon as possible, if they have not already been submitted.

sekwht-- please have your daughter e-mail collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu with her name and CommonApp ID number (or birthdate if she cannot find her ID number) and we will re-send the account generation email.

Hi Grace!
My UChicago Account refers to me by what I submitted as my preferred name on the UChicago supplement (which is totally cool), but my teacher recommendations and my research supplement all use my official Chinese name. Is this anything I need to worry about or correct?

Thank you!

Hi Grace!

I had a question about the Core. I understand that if one does well enough on the Calculus Accreditation Exam during O-Week, one could place into a higher level Calculus class. As a prospective political science major, how many courses of calculus would I be required to take? Could I place out of calculus entirely or only need to take one quarter (MATH 15300)?

Thanks so much!

Hi, Grace,

Per your advice, my daughter sent in a request to the admission office the night before yesterday. I asked her this morning if she has received the account info on the way to her school. She said no. I am so worried now. Should we call the office? I totally understand you guys are very busy now. But without UChicago account, my daughter cannot send in additionals or schedule an alumni interview.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hi Grace,

I just reread my supplements and I found a sentence that was not supposed to be there. I think that it may trip up the readers a little so I’m a little concerned. Should I email my admissions counselor the correct version of my essay??? And is it too late to do that?

Thank you very much

Hello!

I have already submitted my EA application. My top extracurricular activity was a club that I am president of. On my application I said we have “over 30 active members,” but now we have 57. Is this an important enough update to email the admissions office about? Thanks!

My daughter finally received her applicant account info; what a relief! Thank you, UChicago. Cheers!

Hey Grace,

Why are your essays questions so hard? Lol

And on a more serious note, when does your engineering program plan on opening?

ramen4dinner, no need to worry-- your account will refer to you by the name you prefer, but we keep record of legal or traditional names of students in our records, so there is no confusion.

fields0010, political science does not have a mathematics requirement for the major specifically; successful placement on the Calculus test may satisfy your mathematics requirement for the Core. I wouldn’t worry about this too much just yet.

sekwht, looks like this has been resolved, glad to hear it!

runner, it is not possible for us to modify your essays after they have been submitted-- but if you are overly worried about this you may feel free to email your admissions counselor.

Astoria, glad to hear your club has increased! It is not necessary to update the admissions office of this.

Hi UChicago! I am an applicant living in an area affected by Hurricane Sandy (Northern VA). I lost power all through last week, and just got my internet back up on Wednesday (7th). I was wondering if the early action extension applies to me as well, even though I don’t live in NY or NJ. How do you determine which areas were affected enough to warrant an extension. Thanks so much!

Hi UChicago, I’m wondering what an admissions officer would take an Pass/Fail course of AP Calculus AB. I am not intending on engineering/med, etc, rather poli science.

thanks!!!

Hi Grace, I’m an international EA applicants of 2012. Although I’ve already submitted my application to UChicago, I have a worrisome question. In the early replies of yours in this thread, I’ve seen your post that it is good to keep the words around 500. However, when I was writing and editing my supplementary essay for UChicago, because I didn’t see any reference to the word limit on UChicago application, I assumed there is no word limit and wrote the essay in 750 words. While I could have shortened it, I didn’t want to let go of all the vivid and specific details. I don’t think UChicago has a strict word limit but would my long essay matter? I would appreciate your answer!

Hi again,

I was looking over my application and realized that I had left a course off my list of current classes. It is an online PE class I took through BYU and completed just a few days ago. Is it ok that I did not list this one course? It will appear on my mid year transcript but not the one my counselor sent in with the school report. I’m applying EA.

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

My recommendations (two standard teacher recs and one supplemental) were submitted by mail rather than through Naviance. The CommonApp website shows that the counselor rec has been downloaded, but that I have not submitted the teacher forms. Is there a way for me to find out through my UChicago account if my recs have been received? I understand it takes time to process everything, but I just want to make sure that I’ll know if I’m missing anything! (At least one of the recs was sent before Monday, so I would imagine it’s there already if all went well.)

Dear Grace,

It says on UChicago’s website: “UChicago does not require an application fee if you believe it to be a financial hardship (for example, if your family makes less than or around $75,000 a year). Please provide a short note in the “additional information” section of the Common Application and your fee will be automatically waived”

I do believe the application fee is a financial hardship for me. I asked my counselor to send a fee waiver request to Uchicago before submitting the app. Therefore, I did not include any information about fee waiver in my app. However, I just knew that my counselor forgot to send the request. I’m applying for Financial Aid so Uchicago can tell my family’s income is less than $75,000/yr.
My question is that should I call UChicago/ submit a short note via my UChicago account/ ask my counselor to send the request again… or simply do nothing?
Will UChicago read my application if there’s nothing indicate that the payment has been made. I’m really worried right now :(

Thank you so much Grace :"D. I really appreciate your precious time!!~

Hello,

I’m an EA applicant to UChicago, and I have a few concerns.

After submitting my supplement, I discovered that the Extended Essay length is supposed to be ~500 words. However, nowhere on the Common App Supplement Instructions for UChicago does it say this. In fact, I couldn’t find it anywhere except a CollegeConfidential thread and the FAQ.

This seems like important information for an applicant to know from the beginning. I interpreted the length as 1-2 pages single or double spaced, and so I wrote 2 pages single spaced (about 1200 words). If I had known about the preferred word limit I wouldn’t have written that much. But since I couldn’t find a length anywhere in the application instructions, I didn’t think too much about it.

Is it possible to resend a shorter essay, and will this affect my admissions chances?
