UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

The questions about essay length have been answered repeatedly. No, you can’t send a new version of the essay. No, you can’t do anything about it. It probably won’t affect your chances, and please, if you’re going to ask such questions, you might as well view the pages before, because the same question is being asked over and over again.

@sunshinerocks, we are not asking the same question. We are not expecting any answer but we do expect some explanation. There is an apparent difference in the replies of Grace and UChicago online sites about the essay. There is no reference at all (for some applicants like me) on online, so we definitely need some explanation for the discontinuity in Grace’s posts and UChicago essay policy notification.

Hi Grace,
I’ve got an additional recommendation letter from a professor in a university lab. How am I supposed to do to send it to Uchicago? Should I included him as one of the teacher evaluations, or should I upload it myself using my Uchicago account, or should I simply ask the professor to mail the letter to you?

karatekid666, we allowed students to “self-police” and determine whether an extension was an appropriate and relevant option, so there was no formal request process, and no ill effect to students who needed extra time due to the storm. We hope you have recovered enough from the storm to have submitted your application!

ChillyPenguin, we do encourage students to take their courses for quality (letter or percentage, depending on your school) grades in the absence of extenuating circumstances. I would discuss your reasons for choosing a pass/fair option with your high school counselor to determine if it would be an appropriate option.

HateSMUS, no need to worry. 500 words is a guideline, and we have relaxed it a bit. Any essay under 2 pages in length (single spaced or double spaced) is of appropriate length. Our official note on essay length has changed from a 500 word suggestion to a 1-2 pages, single or double spaced suggestion, so please do not worry about previous instruction to keep essays at 500 words-- the bad thing about the Internet is that when you say something once, it sticks around forever :)

Astoria, if this class will appear on your midyear report, it is not necessary to send an additional transcript or other material reflecting that you are taking it at this time.

tarmiriel, please do not worry. We are still processing a lot of the material that has come in to our office, so many students only see “Common App and Supplement” reflected as received in their account at this time. We will contact students when we believe we have processed everything in any cases where a document has gone missing.

gacut, we are happy to waive the application fee of any student whose family considers the fee to be a hardship. Please email collegeadmissions@uchicago.edu with information about this situation, and we will waive your fee.

Allen95, you may invite the professor as one of your recommenders on the Common App or have him submit the recommendation directly to our office by mail-- either is appropriate. We would prefer that students not upload recommendations directly in to their account; we would rather receive the recommendations directly from the instructor, either electronically or by mail.

Hi Grace,

I asked my Macroeconomics teacher to submit a supplemental letter of rec and he e-mailed it directly to the Admissions office with my reference number. Does this letter show up on my account or should I just trust that the university received it?

Thanks!

OK, but can I just invite my professor to send the recommendation through e-mail, rather than mail?

Hi Grace,

Do you not recommend submitting an art supplement if I don’t think my talent is ‘exceptional’? I wrote my Common Application essay about my love for photography, so even though I don’t intend on studying art in college, I feel compelled to submit a portfolio. I’m slightly scared, however, of submitting a portfolio because I’m not sure if my work is up to par for UChicago’s high standards. I’m good, but I’m not (as I said before) exceptional. Could submitting a portfolio that is potentially ‘just OK’ in the eyes of the admissions committee hurt my chances of getting in? Keep in mind my application is not the strongest, and UChicago is quite a reach for me.

Thank you!

Hi Grace,

Is it important for me to send in my AP scores to UChicago? I know it seems like an obvious question, but I got A’s in all of my AP courses, and nearly everybody in my school gets 5’s on AP exams (at least in most courses), including people who don’t get A’s. Will they accept my self-report of all 5’s (which is true), or should I send the scores in just to be sure?

Hi Grace,

I applied EA to UChicago, as did a friend of mine who lives in the same area. He’s already gotten an email from an alumni for an interview, but I haven’t, even though we requested interviews a couple of days apart. Is this just because there were too many requests in my area?

Thank you!

Hi Grace,

I requested an alum interview on 11/4 but I haven’t been contacted yet. What should I do?

My friend told me he received a personal (not automated) call from UChicago informing him that the response time for EA apps has been extended by 2 weeks. So even though decisions will start being released on December 15, they will continue being released for 2 weeks after that. He said he got the call a few days ago. I never got a phone call and am wondering whether I should be concerned.

Hi Grace-

I applied EA and my account was just updated today. It says you haven’t received my test scores. My counselor sent them with my transcript and recs; should I assume you only accept them from the ACT, themselves? Is it too late to request a copy sent to you guys? I still have no power from the hurricane. I did email admissions, but just in case this gets a response first… thanks.

Hey Grace!
In my UChicago account the following appears as “received”-
Received Application Fee
Received Chicago Supplement
Received Common Application
Received HS Transcript
Received Official Test Scores
Received Teacher Recs

However, there is no mention of secondary school reports. Does this mean they have not been received yet as my counsellor already uploaded them a month ago?

jojocircus - my DS’s account looks the same. He double checked on the CA and there it states that the secondary school report was uploaded by the college. Glad to see someone else has this too. I was checking this site to see if anyone else was experiencing the same thing.

Hello Grace, I sent the CSS Profile in weeks ago. Does my UChicago Account tell me if they’ve been received, or if any of the other financial aid things (tax returns) have been received?

jojo and mommaof5, I am experiencing exactly the same thing with you, and when I checked my CA, it states that the secondary school report was already downloaded by Uchicago.

Isn’t “HS Transcript” same as Secondary School Report?

SaberGeek - yes it is.

Hi,

My friend who also applied to UChicago EA (told me she submitted after me) already has her interview set up-and I haven’t received any email about it, even though I did request one. Should I be worrying about this? How do interviews work for the process?
Thanks.

Hi,

Does UChicago require EA applicants to send in their first quarter grades?
