UChicago Questions? Ask an admissions counselor!

This may be a little bit beyond the realm of questions that you can answer, but would a transfer student with a GED rather than a high school diploma, who is currently attending a Community College have much of a hope of admission to UChicago? Do you only accept transfers from other universities, or no?

psgeek17-- this supplemental recommendation will be reflected as simply a “Teacher recommendation” in your account.

allen95, your teacher may e-mail in a copy of the recommendation if he prefers, but we do strongly suggest fax or paper mail as the most secure options for sending. We will not accept teacher recommendations e-mailed in by the student themselves.

bubbles321, any student who wishes to is welcome to submit an arts portfolio-- but it is not necessary to do so, and can be time-consuming to collect and upload the art in an appropriate format if it is not already formatted digitally. So, feel free to do so if you feel that your art represents a significant time commitment that we would not otherwise be able to understand through how you have written about it.

esimpnoxin, we do not require an official AP score report from applicants. You may feel free to self-report your scores on the Common App or, if it has already been submitted, upload a document to the Portfolio with a self-report of your scores.

asi, writingchkk, fallingleaf-- in some areas alumni are still contacting students for interviews, so hold tight. Regretfully, we are not able to interview every student who expresses interest-- but we do try to accommodate as many students as we can. Interviews are not a required portion of our admissions process, and not receiving an interview is not a poor reflection on your application-- we admit many students every year who have not had an on or off campus interview.

Astoria, we did not make calls like this-- the only situation I can fathom here is that the student or her parent called in to our office wondering about an extension due to Hurricane Sandy, and we responded to a message they left indicating that our deadline was flexible, but would not have notified her of an extension of two weeks. The time has passed for submission of EA applications-- it is possible to submit materials that may have gone missing in the process, but students who are in the process of submitting a Common App or supplement or will do so in the future will be considered Regular Decision applicants.

nebraskagal, our financial aid office is still processing aid materials, and those materials may not yet be reflected as received in your UChicago Account. The aid office will contact applicants directly who have indicated that they are interested in applying for aid, but from whom we have not received required documents.

Secondary school reports: Secondary school reports are a part of your high school transcript. If your transcript is reflected as received, we have also received your SSR.

tarmiriel, we do not require quarter grade reports; however, you are welcome to submit them if you wish to. Students who are accepted or deferred will be asked to submit a midyear report, which will reflect both quarter and semester grades for this year.

comfortably, our transfer process is very selective, so we are still looking to see students who have performed strongly in a rigorous environment, and have challenged themselves through a broad curriculum. We have in the past accepted students with both community college and GED backgrounds, so acceptance with such a background is not out of the question-- we will just hope to see that you have challenged yourself with the kind of rigor and performance indicative of potential success in the College. You can learn more about our transfer process online here: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/apply/applicants/transfer/</a></p>

Thanks for the info!

On the transfer info page, it says that courses are ineligible for transfer credit when the courses were taken at a community college. Is this a universal truth, or is this not always the case?

Hi Grace! Question, does having a sub-par SAT score (below 2200) be a bad thing?, or a lack of rigor?, like I have not been able to take AP courses due to moving from out of the country, I managed to take 5/6 Honors courses my senior year, but nothing else. Does this hurt my application? Also to build on @comfortablycurt, do you accept credits through a community college that we took in HS, such as calc or Composition 1 & 2?

Upon doing more reading, it looks as though they won’t accept credit transfer from community colleges, but if you’ve taken courses, you can take placement testing to place out of certain courses, and potentially still get partial credit for the courses. It looks like they don’t accept direct transfers though.

Is this more or less correct?

If in the common application, I have marked a state award both state and national, should i contact admissions and change it? or is it not a big deal

Thanks a lot for the information, Grace.

Hi Grace, if we get admitted under EA, when should we expect to be notified if we are going to get a merit-based scholarship (if any)? Is the scholarship awarded to all qualified EA admits at the same time, or is it released in batches? If in batches, is it done based on the particular quality of a student that qualifies him/her for the scholarship? Thanks in advance.

Hello, Grace, I only just discovered this thread. I am the mom of a EA applicant. After she sent in her application at the end of October, I reread it and realized that she had pretty much left out a strong point of her application: that she had received a couple of summer language study scholarships. I wrote to the general UChicago admissions email address, with the name of the regional representative for our area in the subject heading, giving this information. I never heard back and figured it was because you are all buried in applications. Should I not worry, or resend the information in some other form? Thanks so much for doing this very helpful discussion thread!! The blog is also great!

Hello Grace,
I’ve come to know that highly selective colleges like MIT and Ivies accept only the International Olympiad winners from India(not the Indians who live in US). UChicago is also a highly selective college. So, is it the same with UChicago too?

@hopingforbetter, the short answer is, no. I am absolutely positive that MIT and the ivies do NOT accept only the international Olympiad winners from India, and neither does UChicago. Yes, I said I am positive; you can quote me on that.

comfortablycurt, we are sometimes able to offer credit transfer for some transfer students who have completed coursework at a community college that is comparable in level or subject to work that could be completed at the University of Chicago. We do not allow current students to complete summer work at a community college and the petition for credit. Transfer students from community colleges are still eligible to complete our on-campus placement tests.

ec1026, it is not necessary to contact our office to correct this.

jamesbond, we release merit scholarship notifications to students on a rolling basis; some students may receive notification of a merit scholarship with their offer of admission, while others admitted EA may hear back at a later time, as our merit scholarship committee meets monthly.

ardentgardner, my apologies that you did not receive a response! It is very likely that this information was added to your student’s file. Just in case, I would encourage you to have the student contact her regional counselor directly (contact info for each of us is on this page: https://collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu/contact/</a>) just to make sure.

hopingforbetter, we do not require that international students have participated in an international olympiad to be considered for admission.

Hello!
I had heard the EA decisions would be available on December 15th. Just wanted to confirm this was true.

Thanks!

Uchicagobound, we have not yet finalized a date for when admissions decisions will be released, so any reports of a set date are, as yet, premature. I will post here when we have a finalized date; we expect to release decisions sometime in mid-December.

Thanks Grace! Looking forward to that day!

Hello Gracie

My son recently received a significant honor related to his voluntary communiity project and he has uploaded that information on UChicago site on 1st Dec. He is an EA applicant. Will this information be still considered as part of his application review since there was some date as Nov 29 as the last date for supplementary information.

Thanks

Hi Grace,

I like many applicants, had an employer write a supplementary letter of recommendation for me, and she sent it through the mail on Nov. 2. Do you know how I can check to see that it came through? On the UChicago account, it says that the materials visible only include ones I submitted, not those submitted on my behalf, and that “full credential checking will be opened up later in the month”, but its been that way since early November. When/will applicants be able to check these materials? Thanks!!

Grace - We faxed our 2011 tax forms on Nov. 1, 2012 to UChicago. My son’s financial aid check list shows them missing. I have a copy of the fax and it is the correct number. Should we just fax them again and hope that they get there correctly this time?

^ Same here, I mailed in my parents tax forms late october like the 29th and mine says it hasnt been received. Should I mail them in again, or have they not been processed yet?
