To those of you who are familiar with these 2 colleges, if you were accepted at both which would you choose? I just visited a couple of weeks ago and I went in love with UChicago and I left completely torn between the two. I’m a junior on track to graduate early and I’m going to spend a gap year studying in a monastery in Mexico, weird I know, and so my high school counselor wants me to come up with a list of 5 colleges that I want reccomendations from him for, we’re a huge school and he’s swamped. These two are vying for a position on my list, along with Pomona, Dartmouth, the New College of Florida, and Notre Dame. I hate that I have to hurry up and decide a year early, but that’s life I guess. Anyway sorry for getting distracted, so again if you had the choice to attend either UChicago or the Honors Tutorial College which would it be and why?

UChicago, I almost went there because it has an intellectual environment rivaled by few schools in the country.

I know which one I would choose ;-)

But you probably should have an admissions and financial safety on your list if you need one. Don’t know your stats and don’t know if New College will fit the bill for a safety.

And why only five schools?

Ohio U is notorious for being a party school and not much else. I’m sure it’s honors college is decent, but it definitely doesn’t have the same intellectual atmosphere of somewhere like UChicago… I’d say the two are very different. I would only choose to go to Ohio U if cost were an issue, and if that’s the case, the honors college is a good option.

Sorry for not posting my credentials but I really don’t feel like typing up a whole list of every activity I’ve ever done. However I will say that I am a National Hispanic Scholar and an AP National Scholar and I’m very confident in my writing abilities so I feel comfortable in saying that the New College and UChicago are matches. Dartmouth and Pomona are, as with most applicants, reaches, and I’m not sure about OU-HTC. I’m not from Ohio, but the scholarships that I’ve accumulated and that I’d be offered as a student at their honors college makes cost not a factor, but what is drawing me to the Honors Tutorial College is that they’re the only degree-granting tutorial program in the US, and would be much cheaper than attending Oxbridge. I am looking for an intellectual college, and Chicago was awesome when I visited, but the tutorial program is enticing. Again I’m completely torn, does anyone have any experience with the tutorial program and if so how was it? Did it compare favorably to seminars? Thanks!

I think if you go to OU you willl have a good classroom experience but will not really like anything else about the place. Chicago is the whole deal. I would pick Chicago.

this is not even a decision
CHICAGO ALL THE WAY

I live in the suburbs of central Ohio and all the mediocre to below average kids go to OU to party it up.

Even if you’re looking for a deal there are MUCH better choices than OU unless you happen to apply to their film program which happens to be good.

so in conclusion: CHICAGO

Agreed. I have a friend who went to Michigan for Undergrad but did a post-bac at OU and he thought OU was another planet. Just not the same type of people.

You didn’t mention whether or not you would need financial aid, but you should look into Sarah Lawrence College as well. SLC has an unusual class system that includes traditional classes and one-on-one conferences with the professor. It’s small and near New York City.

Here’s a nice thread talking about Ohio Honors College. Hope this helps.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ohio-university-athens/294722-honors-tutorial-college-anyone.html

I was looking into Sarah Lawrence, but it just seems a little out there. I consider myself somewhat liberal, but more in the model of Tony Blair, not Barack Obama really. I guess I should probably look into it more, but how does their system work? Is it seminars supplemented with tutorials, lecture supplemented with conferences, what the deal?

like rickjames456 im also from central ohio. OU shouldnt be on the same list as UChicago. OU = drinking, partying. Not exactly an intellectual environment. UChicago is hardcore and is a tough tough school.

I don’t think that any AVERAGE state’s school’s “honors” college is ever worth going to over a top private, excluding financial reasons

To keep this thread going, HTC at Ohio University is an elite level academic program and definitely comparable to Ivy League schools and elite liberal arts colleges. For an Ohio resident it is the best academic bargain in America.

People who know nothing about HTC-OU are writing that U.Chicago is clearly better. That is not true. Yes, U.Chicago is obviously a great school, but HTC is not your typical honors program. It is a separate college within Ohio.U and is based on the tutorial program at Oxford University (yes, the one in England). A unique and amazing educational experience.

See the thread posted by whitesox24 above.

" HTC is not your typical honors program."

Compared to the university where it is situated at, I’m sure you’re correct. Your degree will say OU and not UC. You need a safety school, so you definitely should apply to Ohio. Please don’t be fooled by anyone who says that, “HTC at Ohio University is an elite level academic program and definitely comparable to Ivy League schools and elite liberal arts college.”

The OP posted this in 2008. I hope he’s chosen a school by now.

I always forget to look to see when a thread has started. LOL
