I’ve been debating quite recently about changing my major into Drama or Public Health. I am very passionate about both. I want to do Public Health as a career but I want Drama as a ways of having my artistic side of me shine. I’m an ITS member (but I think pretty much anyone can be if they participate in a school play) and I have experience in acting and set construction in theater, I’m really looking into Acting emphasis.

My dilemma is:

-How good is the drama program at UCI?
-Is it possible to major in a public health major and do drama minor? even double major?
-Do u have to be necessarily a drama major to be part of plays?

UCI’s Drama Department is pretty top drawer. You can check out what their alumni are up to here:
[UC Irvine Drama Department :: Alumni Newsletter 2007-2008](http://drama.arts.uci.edu/alumni/newsletter0708.html)

I think a minor in Drama would be doable… double major would be pretty difficult to work into a four-year program.

Requirements for Major:
An introductory course in production theory (Drama 10); Performance Now (Drama 15); one year in acting (Drama 30A-B-C); one year survey in the development of drama (Drama 40A, B, C); three different courses in design (chosen from Drama 50A, B, C, D); one year in the development of theatre (Drama 120A, B, C); in addition to the Drama 120 series, four more upper-division courses, which must include three courses from Drama 103-129; eight units of theatre production (Drama 101) of which four units must be completed during the first year of residence at UCI.

Requirements for Minor:
Drama 10 (Introduction to Production Theory); Drama 30A-B-C (Acting); Drama 40A, B, C (Development of Drama); seven upper-division courses in Drama, each of which must be taken at UCI, including Drama 120A, B, C (Development of Theatre) and one course in Drama 101 (Theatre Production).

Here’s some info about 2008-09 auditions:

As you can see, they don’t explicitly state whether undergrads need to be drama majors/minor (the grads do). But you can also see that, for the major productions:
- they cast in September for the entire year; and
- you’re competing with MFA acting students.

You might call/e-mail the department for more information.

Thank you for the awesome info Mamoose
