UCI Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@ilovemydog2019 I’m commuting too

I will be commuting too. LA to UCI. 50 miles to and back (1-2 hours depending on traffic). Better than spending 15k on dorms. I will actually finish college with zero debt. (basing it on every other UC’s financial aid package…we haven’t gotten UCI’s yet… theyre taking their sweet time)

I live in LA and when I went to transfer day, on a Friday. I left my house at 7:15am and got to UCI at 8:30am. 1hr and 15 mins. Just an idea of the time.

@Jose1996 I will commuting too! I left LA around 7:55am and got to UCI at 9:15am. 1 hr and 20 min. Really the commuting isn’t bad. Is the traffic. On my way back to LA the 710 was running really smooth. In my 60s all the way to the 5 and 101. The 405 is bumper to bumper so Im definitely going to drive streets until I get to the 710.

my time is too valuable to be spent commuting ~3 hours round trip…i personally would be moving closer to my university to make sure i have adequate time to focus on my studies and get involved with school clubs, activities, etc…

@jjang25 we understand that commuting is not meant for everyone. It takes a lot of heart and soul. Commuting doesn’t take away any time from getting involve with school clubs and activities. Is all about planning and being an organized individual.

@C105213 i never said no one should commute. it’s a given that it is not for everyone. some can make it work, some just simply can’t and it is not because we don’t have heart and soul. for those of us working 40 hr weeks, 3 hour roundtrips in a day is a lot. no one is stopping anyone for commuting

You guy indirectly encourage me to realize my ideal scenario that I do love the Irvine neighborhood and UCLA campus. How about if I commute early in the morning from Irvine to LA and at evening from LA back to Irvine? Will be better or worse traffic?

@Bibihcmvn everyone needs to prioritize accordingly. make sure you consider your personal opportunity costs. think of the things you could be doing instead of spending 3 hours a day on the days you commute. if you value being able to live in Irvine more than having to commute, then commuting will work for you. as i get older, i find my time is the most important currency to me. also the cost of gas, depreciation of your vehicle from added miles, lost of time are all things that make me feel it is better for me personally to be closer to my college. also, i value being put out of my comfort zone and part of me wants to move to experience the campus life to the fullest. i wouldn’t want a commute getting in the way of any spontaneous things that i could be doing.

@jjang25 I know you didn’t say “no one should commute”. I really don’t see where I am saying you said that? Assuming your time is more valuable, is exactly why I said “commuting is not meant for everyone”. I would want to believe my time is valuable, but if I commute I guess my time is not valuable. I totally understand where you are coming from with 40 hours a week. I work 50 hours a week (6 days) for the moment. I will be making drastic changes once I start UCI and I hope all my commuters do too. Or otherwise we won’t have anytime for any clubs or activities.

@C105213 i got you. we’re just providing different point of views for others, that’s all

Commuting is ideal if you don’t have extra $$ to spend on a temporary living space when you live remotely close to Irvine in surrounding neighborhoods. I know people who go to work and commute to school as well so it’s all basically up to the person. When someone’s going to commute to school it sucks that other people just think of it negatively.

i don’t think it’s a negative thing really, it just really depends. majority of the comments here were for commuting so i figured i’d provide an argument against it lol. i have commuted to dtla for 3 years from irvine 6 days a week on a motorcycle rain or shine and honestly it is not a fun commute(more dangerous of a commute imo). i did it thinking i would save a lot of money but in hindsight i personally didn’t save much with the added gas spending, the additional maintenance and the wear and tear replacement parts i had to get. maybe this is because i was also paying my portion of the rent in irvine and didn’t save as much. i’m simply trying to provide another point of view. it is a big decision afterall

How do you guys think of the UCI campus? I didn’t visit the school but from the photos on the internet it looks just average. The buildings seem old. I’m having a hard time deciding between UCI and UCSD.

There’s other ways of commuting besides of motorcycle for one I know you can take a 45 minute train ride or even just simply drive there and then I’m pretty sure no ones going to go to class 6 days a week it’s either 2 days or 3 days of class which is every other day so it’s worth commuting instead of living on campus just my opinion

A car or a motorcycle loses value from the moment you drive off the lot. I’m assuming you owned a car by using “depreciation”? If you would be leasing a car depreciation is the last thing in the mind assuming you’re getting a new car every. 3 years. I am assuming we are all responsible and we take care of our cars. Doing regular maintenance give longer life to anything that can positively tear. Doing tire rotation and changing oil is something an owner of the car can do without taking it to the shop. And is only about $150 for both or 50 for oil change every 6 months for those that don’t do it themselves. I hope you’re driving a Japanese car (Honda, Toyota) because American cars definitely lose depreciation. Also, are you selling the car? Even then American cars last long as long as the owner doesn’t skip maintenance. Doing a tear replacement is regular maintenance. Not like your car will give you a red engine light for it. Speaking of your time being valuable when putting your opinion does look down on commuters. As if commuters didn’t consider their time when they decide to commute. I want to assume each student values their time. We didn’t apply and get accepted and SIR to Irvine by accident

Did anyone receive their packet in the mail yet?

@pgn1005 yes I got accepted on April 19 received the packet

April 27

I got accepted on 17th, I think it was Wednesday before Berkely, but still not receive the package. However, I want to know more about the Financial Aid offers…hik…

@UniColn @C105213 all fair points. again, everyone commenting was yay on commuting, obviously since you two are both commuting. i am just providing the other side of the argument. you guys are very bright if you guys have everything figured out. i, for one, was not when i did my commuting and for my purposes it did not work out. you guys are the angels on @ilovemydog2019 and @Bibihcmvn 's shoulder, i’m choosing to be the devil on the other. and if @ilovemydog2019 is like me, as his/her name suggests, i have a dog and i will definitely need to be close to campus so i can take care of his on a daily basis. don’t forget people have applied to many colleges and that does not mean they have already figured out how they are going to make it work. the more thoughts expressed the better for those who are unsure
