i got accepted 04/19 and received my packet this past friday 05/03. residing in orange county. can’t believe we’re still waiting on finaid
this will determine if i go to irvine or sd for me
@jjang25 I don’t think they’re upset with you for sharing your viewpoint and perspective as that’s the whole point of this forum - to share information.
From the language you’re choosing to use, like “argument” and “i’m choosing to be the devil” it sounds like you’re trying to create an argument which I feel is the wrong way to go about this.
@jjang25 I come from a motorcycle country, so I can see what you mean. But driving a car is different, especially in a new vehicle with many entertainment equipments. Usually, 1 hour of commuting one way will be ok for me because I like to drive around after school every day, then it may be ok for me. In case I plan to study at the library and find a job on campus; thus I will commute very early in the morning and go back home late at night, I think the traffic is regular then it may take only 30-45 minutes or so. To me, the most important is the spiritual health of my family and me.
About the car, because I get a new car, the warranty I purchased extra for everything (original warranty is for powertrain) will expire within 7 years or 100,000miles which comes first. So far there are only 4 years left but my mileage is so low, then to me commuting is not a big deal. It’s better to have Dealer changes your parts before the warranty expires, right.
But I agree with you that people need to figure out the whole picture of commuting before making that decision, just like other decisions in life. For example, in my case, I have to think about what if I need to be home in an emergency, what if traffic is more horrible next year, what if…
Thanks for all of you guys giving me more shared experiences on commuting in LA.
@IBkidonthestreet hey sorry if my language sounded bad. i was trying to offer another perspective and then somehow i ended up feeling like i was defending my reasoning. perhaps because i was the only person expressing my concerns about commuting. i am not choosing to make this into an argument by any means.
@Bibihcmvn that’s awesome! i’ve had waaay too many close calls during my commit to la so i am probably very biased haha roads are narrower, more congested and the road conditions are just horrible. commutes will definitely be better in a car and even better if it is in a new one with all the bells and whistles lol i actually visit my brother in culver city quite often. maybe im just getting too damn old for long drives. train sounds like a great idea though. you can study/nap/netflix on the way there lol
i actually purchased a brand new honda s2000 when i first got out of high school and did not think THAT through. my whole paycheck would go to the monthly paymentd and i had to sell that careafter a year because it turns out i couldn’t afford the gas anymore lol oops
yeah i’m just trying to offer another perspective from my experience guys. let’s just say i didn’t think a lot of things through when i first tried adulting. it’s kind of like looking into buying a car and then realizing you didn’t account for insurance costs, annual registration costs, etc. or looking into getting your own apartment and then forgetting about your utilities.
i am realizing now that maybe i could have worded things better. i’m sorry about the “my time is too valuable” part haha i didn’t mean others’ time isn’t valuable. what i meant to say was “sometimes i feel like i run out of hours in a day” . @C105213 if you can work 50 hours a week, attend a highly competitive university such as a UCI/UCLA, i’ve got nothing but respect for you!
@jjang25 my dog will actually be with my parents, haha. I can’t afford a place on my own so I’ll be living on campus
I’d love to commute but not only am I just learning to drive, I’m looking at the courses I’ll possibly be taking and I would potentially be having class every day. I think my circumstances are way different than everyone else’s on the thread who’s commuting :s
I got accepted on the 18th, but still no package. I didn’t even get an email for Transfer Admit Day, so I have no idea what is going on. I’m also residing in OC.
@pgn1005 I got admitted on the 18th and no welcome package yet.
Hi, guys! Do you guys have any input on my situation? Negative or positive critique I’ll take.
Status: Waitlisted
Major: Psychology
GPA: 3.458
Had a 1.54 GPA at the end of my first semester and was able to bring it back up after that failure. Should have a 3.57 GPA if I end spring strong. Cheers!
@xkertiax you should message the admission counselor through your portal if you’re still able to and let them know. I know I messaged them 2 weeks prior to my admission.
Hi guys. this is my first post on this thread. I got into UCI as junior level for Chinese major. But I want to change my major to biology or other major. I just searched their website about changing major, and it says there is possible to change to biology major. (not 100% sure). in the meantime, I got waitlisted UCSD same major. if I have a change to declare to biology at UCSD I will. but unfortunately, they never allow transfer students to change capped major. but personally, I really love UCSD over UCI (I know both of schools really good). so if I get off waitlist from UCSD which choice would be good for me? if you were in my shoes, what would you do?
P.S I am sorry for not being fluent in English. I am still learning
Hi guys, I have a problem and want you guys help me to figure it out.
I got admitted in econ major, and I already submitted my SIR. If I want to change my major to Film and Media Studies, which is in school of humanities. Does that possible or will it influence my offer if i submit a major changed request?
I just checked my Financial aid status and it now says “updated award should be available within 15 days” instead of “mid-May” for the award.
Wow same here. This is getting kind of ridiculous
UCI seems to push students away. Announced acceptance by rolling but so far I still not get the welcome package (since 4/17). The deadline to SIR is coming, but they don’t upload FA yet. Just imagine how I have enough to SIR to other UC in the last few days and send them the partial transcript after I realize UCI’s offer is lower.
Disappointed.
@Bibihcmvn offer in lower in what terms?
@samdol2 Hey there! I’ve have been told by other uni students/advisers that it’s possible, and better (not sure, don’t take my words for it), to change major within the university system when admitted. It’s more like playing around the system, but again, not too sure if other universities basically prohibit/hinder this sort of activity as people tend to apply as non-impacted majors to get a better chance in admission then sudden switch to a highly impacted one when admitted.
For your UC decisions, I have been admitted to UCI and been waitlisted to UCSD as well (as a biological science major). I would prefer UCSD when going in, it’s a beautiful school, but with my finances I don’t think I’d be able to afford it compared to UCI as I live closer to the latter. UCI is also an amazing school, one of my dream school. If you can afford UCSD and think you have a high possibility to get in, go for it!
I meant their Financial Aid offers.
@Bibihcmvn how would you know? It hasn’t been out yet?
Anyone else get their financial aid offer just now? I’m starting to think twice about waiting on UCSD…
@CSTransfer2019 good looking out!
