I’m shocked your son didn’t get in with things you listed.
Do you think he will be willing to share his essays? Sometimes having another person critique the writing can be helpful.
Which CC did your son attend? Also, did he finish up all of the CS prereqs? Almost every UC requires you to finish up all of your lower division CS classes in order to transfer. My son transferred last year to UCI CS and it took him an extra year in CC to complete the extra requirements.
I have three kids in the UC/CSU network and most of my extended family are UC/CSU STEM graduates as well. I don’t think he’d want to share his essays, but I don’t think they were the issue based on our collective experience.
I also know of kids with stronger extracurriculars and/or GPAs who have been denied admission to CS as well. He probably just looks like one of many high-stat kids from a well-off zip code and they can’t accept them all.
He had freshman year at a CSU, then a year at a CC, but he also completed 5 courses at CC during summer terms. He did complete all the prerequisites.
He had actually deferred at the CSU in favor of CC because he wasn’t getting any of the classes he needed (not enough sections, all the slots taken by juniors).
He got accepted at CSUF (which he’s content with) and waitlisted at UCSC. Still waiting on UCD & UCSD, but with tempered expectations.

Can you specify what cs courses you mean? At our cc, there is intro to c++, adv c++, assembly, object oriented and 1 more. Is that all?
Son waitlisted for CS. GPA 3.8. None of the major courses at CC articulate to UCI. Wondering if there is any point. Accepted at UCR (TAG) and UCSC for CS.

Got accepted as a waitlist for software engineering major (transfer), anyone know how often they take waitlist? 
Congratulations!!! How often and when they admit off the waitlist depends upon how many spots are open. There is no specific timeline for waitlist admit decisions.
Do you still have until June 1 to SIR?
