I am trying to decide between going to UCI and SLO for an economics major. Has anyone decided between the two? And if you have, what made you decide one over the other? I’m just trying to find the school where I will most likely find a job straight out of college considering the recession we’re in right now.

As a society, we can’t see 3 months into the future (will Greece default?) let alone 5 years. With regards to the job market, no one can tell you which will be better.

My two cents: Probably doesn’t matter.

EDIT: I assumed you were talking specifically about the major. Even with regards to the campus, it doesn’t matter. Pick whichever you like more.

Both are very good schools. One plus for UCI, it is in Irvine, the heart of a lot of business parks (many large well known companies). And Irvine is in Orange County, even more businesses spread across Orange County. And it is less than an hour to San Diego County and/or Los Angeles County. For SLO, you have SLO (very nice, but very small city). Next, an hour away is Santa Barabara (very prestigious, very beautiful, but it is really more of a tourist town than business community. I concede SB does have many businesses, but not nearly as many as Irvine, Orange County, LA and SD counties.

You shouldn’t choose a school, just because of the nearby companies, but since you asked. …
